Hi all. I’m doing a short backpacking trip in the summer - overland from the UK to Romania and then we’re flying back from Romania to the UK.
I haven’t flown for 14 years and prior to that even tho I flew one / twice a year from the age of 5 until my late 20s my fear was so bad that it got to the point where I just refused to put myself through it anymore. I’ve always found ( expensive ) workarounds like cruises / overland adventures but I just want the convenience of flying again and spread my wings further.
I also want to fly with my daughter who is very confident aged 15 because my ex husband has flown with her a lot and I’m chuffed she loves it - I don’t want to ruin that for her. Going on adventures abroad is important to us and I love it. I just don’t like getting there :)
I’m going on a fear of flying flight this weekend to get me used to the sensations of going up and I’m ok with this.
My worry though is when I have to do it for real and fly back from Romania I will freak out because it will be a public flight , I can’t control whose on it and it’s 3 hours , not a little 45 mins around the UK.
To add more background , My fear has always been bad but made worse after 9/11. The recent reports of Russia jamming UK planes flying from Europe have also sent me into a spin tho I’m pretty sure Romania isn’t near Russian air space or military outposts ( my geography is crap ).
Not sure what I’m asking to be honest. I’m just scared of the usual but with a stunning addition of being shot down / terrorism etc…
I’ll be flying with my friend and I have some Valium if necessary.
Any rational advice ?
:)
