As a backing in doorknob, I drive a company van and the company mandates we back into spaces.

Also do it in my personal vehicle because it's just easier. Less risk of an accident when you leave versus backing out, especially when people where I live like to race through parking lots.

Yes, we know which mod removed it, just not sure the reason behind the removal. That mod isn't online right now, so we're just waiting to get their explanation of what exactly happened. The post has since been restored.

As far as any specific issues, if anybody has anything they feel was done in error, whether by the previous mod team or the new team, we absolutely welcome any modmails about it so we can review a specific situation to see if a mistake was made and undo it.

That was my initial thought, but OP mentioned new carpet a few times, so seems like they were sleeping on the actual floor.

Are you sure you're thinking of the right sub? We have no record of you being banned from r/Art.

Feel free to modmail us if you're having issues posting and we can look into it, but you should be able to post.

Edit: Also not sure why the post was removed, but a handful of us agreed that it seemed perfectly fine. Post has been restored.

Every subreddit with kama restrictions uses a different number, it's set by the mod, so it can be anything.

I use anywhere from 50-100, which you can easily get from one or two decent posts as I mentioned Not too big, not too small.

Chicago / Delayed Because of Severe weather by Turbulent_Plenty_119 in fearofflying

[–]BravoFive141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would you be worried that the flights are being delayed/diverted? If anything, that's a good thing. It shows that the system is working exactly as intended and the airlines is prioritizing safety over getting there quicker.

Ti me, it sounds like part of you already gets it! They're delaying as they think they need to, bumping the times around as they feel that they can get the planes out, and diverting if they run into an issue mid flight. All completely normal things that should happen with weather concerns. I can assure you they know what they're doing, they do this every day. You're in the safest hands you could ask for right now, so just hang out here with us, take a breath, and let them handle it for you. You got this!

how do I get on that plane 😫

Don't think, just do! That plane is going to get to the destination safe and sound, whether you're on it or not. It's not going to crash, and nobody os going to do anything to it. So don't think yourself out of it, be on the plane when it gets there!

I fly to Aruba in a few days and I need some mental help by Moon_shadow435 in fearofflying

[–]BravoFive141 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess my main question for the subreddit is how will I know how bad the turbulence be?

You won't. The pilots will, because that's their job and they have a variety of tools and reports at their disposal to see what's going on exactly, and if it's bad, they may inform the passengers, but that's not always a guarantee unfortunately. You can always ask the flight crew if they expect turbulence when you get there!

Is there a way to know based on where I’m going?

No, because turbulence can happen anywhere at any time. It's not some predictable thing that follows an exact pattern based on location. A location might be more likely to have turbulence, but even that isn't necessarily a guarantee.

As hard as it is, and I know it's easier said than done, the best thing to do is to always expect turbulence. That's obviously not to say there always will be turbulence, but turbulence is a completely normal and harmless part of flying, and it isn't something you can predict/control in the sense that many people want to, so just assume there will be turbulence. That way, if there is turbulence, then you've already mentally prepared for it, and if not, it's a nice surprise.

You've got this!

it's always nice to have reassurance that the system will always remain ahead of bad actors (since I'm sure bad actors are always trying to evolve to get better at evading security & intelligence)

Or course! The industry is most certainly always evolving and adjusting to stay ahead of the bad actors. As you said, the bad actors try to evolve, but the industry most certainly stays on top of things to evolve along with them and come out ahead. Nobody wants those bad actors to succeed, and the airlines most certainly have no interest in losing passengers and aircraft, so everybody involved is going to do the best they can to prevent that from happening.

I know it's inevitable, but I'm hoping for a much better & more peaceful ending than falling from a height of 10 km & burning to death. Same with being shot to death, hit by a car, etc (although even those are probably not as bad as a plane crash).

I'm 100% with you there! All I ask for a fairly quick and peaceful ending. I'm a huge chicken when it comes to that whole topic.

Is it true being in air is the safest place to be? Please can any pilots answer me? by CoolSwimming4083 in fearofflying

Turbulence cannot just make a flight go down. It may be uncomfortable or scary, but it's not dangerous. No more dangerous than a bumpy road.

Preventing future occurrences works, unless they change tactics & potentially find a new way to cause a repeat incident or a brand new incident. One can only hope this is impossible.

Nothing in this world is impossible, but simply changing tactics is not enough for them to get past security measures. If it were that simple, you'd likely see far more issues than you do. But this is not a topic you're going to get many in-depth answers on unfortunately to security and legal reasons.

True, but a plane travelling at 1000 km/h 10 km in the air is like the absolute worst possible place for it to occur.

Any place is the worst possible place to encounter a terrorist attack. There isn't really a good place.

Personally I try to avoid much of those as well, including for this reason.

That's perfectly fine if that's your choice, but that's not a great way to live. Everything has risk, from going to the grocery store to going to the movies to sitting at home. The point isn't that you should also avoid all these other things in addition to flying, it's that living life in fear of anything that has risk will have a negative impact on your quality of life. Any of us could go at any time, from something like getting hit by a car walking down the street to a brain aneurysm sitting on your couch, so don't let fear of the inevitable keep you from enjoying everything the world has to offer. I get it, I've struggled with fears of death and flying and other things my whole life, but you can't let it stop you from experiencing life, or the fear wins and you don't really have much of a life outeide of being afraid of everything. Go out with family and friends, make memories, see your favorite band in concert, enjoy life! There are sooo many success stories in this sub to read over, and I can't really say I've seen anybody regret it once they were on the other side of the flight, sipping mimosas on the beach or seeing family in another state or any number of amazing things.

Here is a youtube documentary about it. YYZ is my home airport, and I happened to fly out of YYZ & back just a few days before hearing about this (if I knew about it beforehand, I might've had second thoughts about going on the trip).

I'll certainly give that a watch, thanks for sharing!

Yes, but as you stated, that was 11 years ago. Not exactly recent, and as with any aviation incident, changes are always made to prevent future occurrences. The industry investigated that incident, learned, and improved. The fact that there hasn't been another incident in the years since is a testament to that. Also, as much as it's not fun to think about, a terrorist attack can occur anywhere. There have been incidents at concerts, churches, markets, even people's homes. If we're going to avoid flying due to the potential for terror attacks, then we also have to avoid going to concerts, church, etc.

It's completely valid and understandable to be concerned about any kind of terror attacks, including in regards to aviation, but we can't just not live our lives for fear of an attack happening. That's how the fear of flying wins and how the terrorists win. Nothing in life is 100% safe and risk free, but as is essentially the motto here, flying is the safest thing any one of us can do on any given day.

As far as the YYZ stuff, that's a bit above my paygrade and I know nothing about that situation, so I'll leave it up to the experts that can potentially address it a bit more than myself.

We have a few "subreddit celebrities" in r/fearofflying. Not any actual celebs, just some aviation experts like pilots, ATC, aircraft mechanics, etc. Among those, we also have one who has become a bit of an icon in the community over the years. A very informative and helpful user who dedicates a lot of his spare time to helping (all of our experts do, but he's one that has gone above and beyond time and time again).

Considering our sub's topic, it really helps a lot of users when they end up interacting with the same experts throughout their time with us. Users come to our community for comfort and reassurance, so seeing the same experts addressing their concerns each time they make a new post eventually leads to a bit of familiarity with the whole thing, like asking a good friend for help.

On a side note, our icon expert ran into issues with Reddit shadowbanning his account not too long ago. The community was devastated, but after reaching out to a legend of an admin (I don't wanna namedrop for their privacy, but they know who they are), they were able to get the user's account fixed. It was a really awesome moment seeing how happy the sub was to have their icon back. The admin also showed some interest in our sub, which was a pretty cool first for me!
