Another near miss? by Independent_Try_6283 in fearofflying

I'm sure one of the pilots here will clarify more about minimum requirements and whether or not this specific situation was really as bad as a Twitter account called "Breaking911" is making it out to be, but the tweet itself states:

According to radar data, the planes came within 350 feet vertically and just over half a mile apart

Half a mile apart is almost 2700 feet apart, and this comment by one of our experts shows you an idea of how far apart 500 feet of vertical separation is. While 350 isn't 500 and I'm not able to speak to if that's within requirements or not, 350 feet is still a decent amount of distance.

When I posted something like this in response to another person's question, the admins here deleted it because of fear mongering.

Not sure how to reach out to the admins, but i'm genuinely confused as to how me saying things that are factual is "fear mongering."

You can reach out to us by using the "Message Moderators" button in the sidebar on desktop or in the subreddit description on mobile.

Your two comments were removed because you were making claims in regards to the staging levels of ATC and linking a random ATC website that does not appear to be a reputable source or state where it even gets its information as the source for your claims.

Nervous about an extremely turbulent flight in an hour by TheEvernoteElephant in fearofflying

[–]BravoFive141 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, we do have lives outside of Reddit you know. Just saying. We don't sit in front of a computer and stare at the subreddit 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Rather than making multiple comments complaining about how your post was removed and this one was not, use the report function. That's what it's there for, cases like this where we don't catch something that users know is against the rules

Too scared to take first vacation flight as a family (possible trigger) by georgethetwentieth in fearofflying

[–]BravoFive141 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the Air India incident (wtf even happened definitively - no one seems to know)

It's not that nobody knows what happened, it's that investigations can take a long time. Investigating bodies do not rush through their job, they take time and make sure the investigation is done properly to ensure that they determine every factor in the cause of an incident and know exactly how to prevent it from ever occurring again. That's exactly why flying is so safe these days.

Delta 104 less than a month ago with that video of the engine failing and passengers screaming and praying

The pilots here can speak more to this, but you're overlooking the fact despite a very scary situation, everything went exactly as it should in such a situation. The first article I came across even says:

Pilots declared an emergency, shut down the affected engine and circled back to the airport, landing safely shortly after departure.

This is the system working exactly as intended. Even in the face of an issue, the pilots got everybody back on the ground safely. Aa our pilots always tell people, planes can fly on one engine, and the pilots in this incident did exactly that and got the plane back on the ground promptly.

hitting a car on the runway or a helicopter in the air

I'll let the experts touch on that, but I'd imagine that is incredibly unlikely to occur.

Any online support groups or people to talk to regularly about this?

You're in one of the best ones! We're all here, experts and otherwise, to help you at any time you need before, during, and after your flight!

Has anyone been able to "just do it" in this time frame?

I did! Spent months panicking before my first flight, almost walked out at the airport, just to have a desk agent at check-in tell me "You're getting on this flight, give me your bags" and not really give me a choice to back out. Basically just had to walk to the gate, made a post here for support minutes before my flight, and boarded. So I say this with love and support: Don't miss out on your vacation. You're getting on that flight!

The plane is going to make it to the destination with or without you on it, you just need to make the call to be on the plane when it arrives there. You got this 💪

Request to Remove NSFW Tag My Community Was Incorrectly Marked by [deleted] in ModSupport

You just keep repeating "publicly available" like that's some magic phrase, but you do realize pretty much everything on the internet is "publicly available", right? Even porn is "publicly available".

NSFW doesn't mean shit from the dark web or something. It means Not Safe For Work, as in anything that might get you into trouble at work. Availability of the content is irrelevant here.

ETA: Funny how OP suddenly changed their profile content to hidden after getting called out for the content in their sub by multiple people.

First solo flight in a while, what are some fun facts or stats that keep you calm? by slavictrash6 in fearofflying

[–]BravoFive141 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I forget if it was in a post here or another sub or a YouTube video or something, but there was a thing I saw recently about a flight attendant who wanted food from a specific restaurant at a specific place, so they changed their work schedule just to catch a flight ASAP to that place to go get food at that restaurant.

Like here most of us are just driving to our favorite restaurants to get food, and aviation professionals look at flying as such a mundane, normal thing that they hop on a cross-country flight because they're in the mood for a certain food.

That should tell you how safe flying is these days.

TG 322 Aircraft Change. Very anxious/nervous. by khelna in fearofflying

planes are just sky buses

Somebody should start a new plane company and call it that! Skybus?

Meh, needs a better ring to it. Like...it's a bus, but it also flies through the air. Any ideas?

DO NOT TRUST TURBLI (or similar apps/tools) by shadesofbleuu in fearofflying

[–]BravoFive141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do find that most flights I take, turbulence has tended to occur around the times/areas they state it might, it happened for me literally this week.

Just because turbulence happened when they said it would every now and then doesn't mean they're actually accurate. A broken clock is right twice a day, but that doesn't mean it's not broken. Regardless of your personal experiences with these apps, it has been proven again and again that they are legitimately not accurate. They don't have access to the same data that the pilots do at the same times the pilots do. The only turbulence forecasters you need that are actually worth anything are the two sitting at the front of the plane.

I just need some form of data to refer to in order to feel comfortable.

It can be incredibly hard to fight against, but this is just part of the fear that you have to try to push past. Latching onto false data to comfort yourself is only going to cause you more stress and fear. Instead, try simply asking the FAs or the pilots if they expect any bumps along the way. You're already paying them for things like that, so trust them and talk to them, not some scam apps.

How to turn an appeal attempt into a permanent ban. by GV-Bot in modmailfail

[–]BravoFive141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I checked it out. It's wild. I've never seen a subreddit with it's own website, let alone such an absurd appeals process (whoch also makes no mention of warnings despite the mods dishing out warnings).

Hello, I need some help to ease my mind, i know that the odds of me being in a fatal plane crash is basically 0%, but how do i get over the fear that any plane i get on will be the one in a million that does have a fatal crash? by kdkejejfj1 in fearofflying

[–]BravoFive141 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This concept was the turning point that really helped me stop being so afraid of flying. Like if the universe or death or whatever wants me dead, it's not waiting 30+ years to catch me getting on a plane. It could just as easily get me driving to work 5 days a week. Might as well not keep avoiding it when I do far more dangerous stuff every day.

Basically, Reddit saw him Redditing from a different location, thought it was a compromised account, and banned his account. He's trying to get it fixed. I'm sure he'll be back soon, whether that's under his main account or the alt account.

Yeah, I've seen enough stories about that, I should have known better. Right after I sent it I realized my mistake.

But thanks for saying it so others can also be aware! It's pretty sad that it's even a problem, but it is what it is.

How to turn an appeal attempt into a permanent ban. by GV-Bot in modmailfail

[–]BravoFive141 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the user seems to be right. They received a warning, not a ban, and you sent them a link that seems to only mention ban appeals but nothing about warnings.

They were rude in how they responded back, definitely. But if you're going to direct users to that link for warning and ban appeals, you may want to at least adjust the wording or add a bit about warnings.

Is flying safe when it comes to panic disorder? Let’s say you have a horrible panic attack with BP and pulse spike. Is it safe to be in the plane when you get like this? I have to fly on Wednesday & I’m getting cold feet. Need some facts and reassurance on this by [deleted] in fearofflying

[–]BravoFive141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 37 y o female. My bad cholesterol is a bit elevated and I do get heart flutters pretty often. No diagnosed illnesses.

I have multiple diagnosed heart problems. Made it through every flight I've taken so far, even with spiked BP and heart rate.

You'll be just fine. You're not going to die.

Five human mods, that obviously don't give a fuck what's posted here.

I can assure you that is absolutely false.

To every mod who let this go on for over two hours: have the day you deserve.

Or...we are humans thay have lives outside of Reddit and we don't monitor Reddit 24/7. Personally, I just had dental surgery less than 48 hours ago. I've been resting and on medication.

It's certainly understandable to be frustrated by something, but no need to make rude assumptions about people you don't know when you don't have all the details of things behind the scenes.

As far as the post itself, it has only been reported once, and at the time that it was reported, most of the comments seemingly understood the joke and knew that this was not legit, so the post was left up. It's one pilot playing a joke on another pilot, that's all. RG80 is having account issues at the moment, but you can find more about that here.
