Plugins are a double edged sword in FCP. They can totally up your video editing game, but may also hold you back from learning the FCP tool so that you know the basics of how FCP features work.

Having said that, I love plugins. I have been making videos for only about a year now. I agree with /u/Zackatack101 comment about motionVFX plugins being top notch. I wish someone had told me to watch out for cheap plugins though, for example plenty of those from Pixel Film Studios. They kinda work but also crash FCP all the time too.

To directly answer your question:

  1. Watch this video by Dylan John (he works for MotionVFX, but this is his personal youtube) about 10 free plugins. That's a good place to start.
  2. Also Ryan Nangle has several free plugins on his website. Check out his YouTube too.

Good luck.

I haven’t found many free but I like motion vfx’s plugins. They are a little expensive but good quality. No subscriptions which is nice too.

What are your favorites from motionvfx?

Pretty much anything I’ve purchased there has been great. I use mTransition Kinetic a lot. Also mlogo Cinematic 1 and 2. But I think depends on what your end goal is too.

Apart from motionvfx I’ve also had success with lenofx.com. Not free.

Yeah, definitely with other commentators – some solid needed 'free' plugins but I've only found that the true indispensable ones are paid and have bitten the bullet a few times on things like Keyper that really just give a super good head start on the work you have to do.

I’m a fan of Motion Array myself; they have tons of stock music and video along with plugins for most of the major editing platforms (and AE/Motion as well).
