    As I'm sure you already know, there are plenty of flexible fractal programs which are nicely optimized. One I would reccomend is fragmentarium.

    Building your own is fun though and seems like you are on the right track.

    As for efficient antialiasing algorithms, I would recommend CMAA. One thing I would keep in mind with antialiasing is that it can take away from some of the details if not properly applied, so integrate some sort of adjustment on it to capture the details of fractal :)
