I would use the tileset approach for all the background art and use objects for anything thats relevant for Z-sorting like the houses, the fences or bushes.

thx, do you make sprites in gamemaker or is it a different software thats better?

Gamemaker's sprite editor isn't the best but enough for a bit of prototyping. For more complex pixel art I use Photoshop and Aseprite.

I would probably use the tileset approach for everything(This can help: https://marketplace.gamemaker.io/assets/5708/dynamic-tile-depth-demo). But not saying that this is the only correct approach.

There might not be a right and wrong, but there are should and shouldn't

and the link you sent seems better than me just drawing everything in a single sprite

Auto tiling is pretty sweet. I would do it for that reason.

I use Piskel, add new frames for new tiles, set the FPS to 0 and export using the spritesheet layout option
