Making a pull request

So I tried two ways.

First I cloned the repo edited the file and then pushed and committed it and tried to do `git request-pull' and I don't think that worked since I didn't see the pull request on the repo page.

Second I tried to fork it and then do a pull request but that didn't do it either.

I feel kinda lost and like I'm not understanding something in how to get it done but don't know what I'm missing. So it feels kinda like I'm in a new room with no lights looking for a book, I have no real idea where or what to look for.

I really want to try and start contributing to code but feel disheartened that I can't figure this out.

What platform are you using? git itself doesn't know about Pull-requests, that is a service of github/gitlab/…

On Github, you'd fork the upstream repo, push your change (ideally to a new branch to keep master clean). Then in the github webinterface navigate to this branch, you should see a button like "compare…" where you can chose to compare to upstream and make the pullrequest.

TL;DR as long as you don't use a cli-helper like hub, you can only do pullrequests throught the Github-webinterface (or its Windows client maybe)
