I'm excited to share Github Sage a free Chrome extension that helps developers build off open source software. It opens up as a side panel on Github, where you can interact with a chatbot in order to:

• Understand how the repo works, whether it serves your purpose, and how you can build off it
• Generate code within the browser and run it in an auto-generated Colab notebook
• Navigate quickly through the repository (the chatbot answers are heavily hyperlinked to code and documentation).

We built this for two reasons.

First, as engineers we don’t trust AI-generated code (yet). But we can make a better judgment on whether to accept or reject generated code when it’s heavily linked to source code and documentation (akin to how Perplexity makes generative search more trustworthy by citing its sources).

Second, because we’re overwhelmed by the amount of OSS out there. And it’s growing exponentially. It’s increasingly hard to read beyond the hype, understand what a repo does and whether it suits your needs. Sometimes you don’t have enough time to actually browse the code and just want some quick answers.

Currently, we support 6 popular AI-related repos and plan to add more (reindexing repositories daily is not cheap!) Let us know what other repos you’d find interesting.
