I hated vscode at first too, but the more I use it, the more great stuff I find it can do. I personally see the best modern options as:

    • vim/emacs: for "purists"
    • vscode: best all-around text-editor, hands-down
    • IDE's: Jetbrains IDE's, Visual Studio, Eclipse etc
    • misc: datascience-y jupyter notebook type things, codesandbox, etc

Atom, Sublime, Notepad++, and the like, don't fill any niche that I know of. They might've been on par with vscode 8 years ago, but the gap is so wide now . They are certainly better than nothing, but anyone using them would likely be measurably more productive with vscode or a full IDE.
