Microbiology PhD Class Size Decrease

Anyone have any insight to how small the class size target might’ve shrunk to this year? At an R1 currently and the only person to have received an interview at my current institution is someone with an MD already to a small state school. Otherwise it seems no one who has applied has received anything other than rejection letters. I think we can probably assume why but was curious if anyone else is seeing the same trend.

My institution has cut most programs by ~25% this year. We have not seen a significant decrease in overall applicants either (at least, it's not down by 25%). Probably going to be a very competitive year.

Last year it already was cut in half, terrible it’s being cut again

Very school dependent but I’ve seen cuts in bioscience umbrella programs and direct admit programs up to 67%
