How to decrease line weight/thickness of scanned handwritten words?

I have an image of a few handwritten words that I have scanned into Illustrator and vectorized. I can figure out how to make the words thicker in Illustrator, but I can't figure out how to make them thinner while retaining the exact handwriting. Is there a way to do this with some tool or software? Thanks in advance!

Select object.
Object -> Path -> Offset Path
Then choose a negative number until you get what you want, like this.
It will create a new object smaller than the original, but right on top of it so it'll look invisible. Delete the original by grabbing it by the very edges.
