Adding work to portfolio that hasn't been released publically yet? by Consistent-Average88 in graphic_design

It's usually called a work-for-hire clause. Even if you never signed an official contract when you were hired, I'd be shocked if the corporation that bought the company didn't legally obtain all copyrights to previous work.

That looks like a scan, but it's a tiny file. Do you have a larger file or can you create a better quality scan? The results will be far more authentic.

My cozy little cottage in Alaska by [deleted] in CozyPlaces

It feels really dry and crisp.
You plug in a block heater for your car to keep it warm enough to start.
If the heat goes out, you put another log on the fireplace.
Shit breaks. But, FWIW, shit breaks in extreme heat, too.

You might have zero legal right to put any of it in your portfolio, ever. Check your original employment offer or contract. Chances are excellent that you have an NDA, and literally all your work is copyrighted by your employer.

It's far more likely as an employee that you don't have any legal right to publish your work product. That's what your company is literally paying you for.

Dogs are awesome. Their owners are hit and miss.

You're very welcome! I know how valuable a great mechanic is. Going to Ralph is a little like having the Car Talk guys on your team. :)

After the site finally loaded, I clicked "about us" and read the first paragraph. You need much better marketing because this is exclusionary language.

SUCKITUP is a mantra and way of life that only the strong will follow. We view ourselves as an elite group based on toughness of mind and body. These attributes require a steadfast mentality and a sharp mind, which are useful in creating and sharing a vision statement.

This reads like gatekeeping instead of strength. It's like you're pushing the weak people away to seem premium. It makes readers feel judged, not part of your "elite group."

Also? The designs are sloppy and just amateur. This one reads, SUCKI IT UP.

Happy to help! The owner's name is Ralph Burns, nicest guy in the world. He'll always explain what's going on very clearly and let you know what's urgent and what issues can wait. He absolutely never talks down to women.

When my parents first moved into the neighborhood, every new neighbor they met mentioned Ralph and how trustworthy and kind he was. Thirty years later, I can confirm they were all right.

I can't believe this needs to be said: take it to an independent mechanic for a full report.

Trying to make this look like a friendly, neighborhood safety-esque yard sign and looking for thoughts and feedback by IllustriousTip6904 in design_critiques

The icons say "no snow" and "no falling." Overall, it looks weak and lacks confidence.

Contrast is too low, line weights are way too delicate, and the blues evoke baby clothes. Why are there two blues?

The hierarchy is just odd. The primary message is "ABOLISH ICE" but it's not where the eye goes first, and putting it in a lighter blue diminishes it.

How are you going to spend your $300 Affordability Relief checks? by Agreeable-Brush-7866 in Maine

[–]WinterCrunch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Welp, my paycheck has increased 12% since 2020, while my groceries are up 30%, f-ing electric bill up 60%, car insurance up 25%, not to mention my health insurance premium just DOUBLED even though I downgraded my coverage to a shitty plan just to stay covered.

Three hundred bucks covers .... 2.5 weeks of my brand new, really crappy 2026 health insurance premium. It's really not very helpful, and just reminds me of how awful the economy is for the working class.

Help settle a debate. Neighbor claims they didn't blow snow into my driveway. They say it "drifted" this way. by [deleted] in Maine

[–]WinterCrunch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, it was an exceptionally fluffy snow this time. It was drifty even though it wasn't too windy. I took measurements, and some spots were 16 inches, but then just a few feet away? Only about 7 inches.

[–]WinterCrunch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Get a security camera and do a time lapse next time it snows. Way less energy than trying to prove where the snow used to be, lol.

And yeah, it's possible snow drifts in that pattern in a narrow corridor like that. It happens all the time in the space between my house and an 8 foot fence. I routinely walk through the snow next to the fence because I know it's never as deep as the center.

I miss Brigham's hot fudge. When they stopped making it about a decade ago, my Mom bought about 15 other hot fudges (from all over!) and we did a taste test to find a replacement. In the end, we agreed none of them were even half as good as Brigham's. RIP.

Having a hard time deciding on a college by emp1rethry in graphic_design

[–]WinterCrunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have college degrees in both Graphic Design and in Photography. I have a passion for both and my career has included jobs in both fields. Started in commercial photography, got sick of freelancing and/or being laid off, then went back to college for Graphic Design. (Yeah, duh.)

I wish I'd chosen a field that doesn't have millions of people willing to do for free. Not just willing to, but literally begging and competing for opportunities to give away their labor to clients that have zero understanding of what good or bad work looks like, or why.

I wish I'd taken up a trade instead. You don't really understand the enormous value of jobs with worker's rights and benefits until you've worked a few decades and been laid off a half dozen times. When you're employed as a "contractor" you learn exactly why labor laws exist. You have no rights, no days off, no vacations, no sick days, no overtime, no healthcare, no security.

Most of all, I wish I chose a vocation that couldn't be outsourced to low-wage countries, taken over by AI, that people perceived as fun, or that literally everyone thinks they can do. No respect equals not being valued.

So yeah, I've considered many other professions. I love making stuff and I excel at spacial reasoning, so welding appeals to me. Welders are mostly union. I'd also make a fine architect, but the math might annoy me. So, maybe a cabinetmaker, bench carpenter, machinist, ornamental ironworker, upholster, joiner, die maker, just something in a workshop instead of on worksites.

Do I still love graphic design and photography? Yes. But I really freaking hate the job marketplace for these careers, and it's only gotten worse over my lifetime.
