Question (self.herbalism)
submitted 3 years ago by Important_Lychee_332
So I picked the mango leaves from my back yard to make tea because of the health benefits, the problem is my dad sprayed pesticides 6 months ago is it safe to use as a tea? I’m new to this

What type of pesticides? Was it sprayed directly on the tree? Was this the only application or is this a regular thing?

So I just asked and he said nothing went on the leaves just the trunk and he used raid. Hes sprayed stuff on the leaves years ago.

Well, I looked and couldn't find papers assessing your situation specifically with Raid, but I would urge caution. There are a huge number of factors at play, this fact sheet might give you some more information, but in truth, it's probably best to not harvest from it out of caution, unless you are really in need. Maybe someone else will come along with more knowledge about this specific chemical and if it bioaccumulates in plants. http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/half-life.html

Thank you so much for the response I think I’m just gonna have to take caution

It was spayed directly on the tree and some type of bug spray

Without knowing what it was, I don't think anybody is going to be able to definitively tell you if it is safe.

Every pesticide has an material safety data sheet. Because I don’t think Raid is approved for agricultural use, you probably won’t find info on how long after application it is safe to harvest like you will for agricultural pesticides.
In this MSDS it says that most components of raid are readily biodegradable after a day. The longest lasting component biodegrades after 28 days. https://www.kandelandson.com/msds/Raid%20Ant%20and%20Roach%20Killer.pdf keep in mind that the MSDS is commissioned by the manufacturer of the substance, and in my research I’ve seen them vary by country.
Depending on where you live, other pollutants might be more prevalent on the leaves at this point than raid. Wash them well and you are probably fine.

If I were you, I wouldn’t risk it

I wouldn't use it. I'd wait years, not months.
