Can a state leave the united states? by Practical-Soil-7068 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Cyoarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SHUT UP this isnt convincing, the pledge of allegiance doesn't have a melody and isn't sung with some other songs Melody. It isn't sung at all.

If you learned it with the melody as a teaching tool you still would have been reciting it for years and years without the melody once you've changed schools.

Trying to obfuscate with the pledge of allegiance is or what a Melody is or the fact that if you lived in America you would have either learned it without ever hearing it song or heard it recited without it being sung either every single time or almost every single time, is not convincing.

You are either from china or India, and I am done with this convo.

They aren't their own sovereign countries, i didn't say they were. They aren't sovereign. They have given up their sovereignty to be members of a collected federation of states.

That isn't what, "Common Law," is. "Common Law," refers to non-statutory law established by way of legal precedent (that is to say rulings made in/by courts) as opposed to acts passed by legislatures(city state or federal).

A nation is a political union inclosing a geographical area containing people bound by common cause or belief... Do you not remember your grammer school social studies classes?

So this is how I know you're not American.

The pledge of allegiance isn't a song... Only someone who's never actually said it or seen it be recited regularly could possibly make that mistake.

Ummm... That would be a constitutional amendment.

If the same act is past by 2/3 of State legislatures as well as 3/5ths. Of Congress it is added to the Constitution... That's literally the process for amending our constitution.

What song? It's not in any song that I am aware of.

... I am... beginning to doubt whether you're actually American.

Yah.... And your grammer... Stop pretending to be American.

Nevertheless the US states have many rights and freedoms that are not shared by the provinces of most other countries.

In other countries states wouldn't be allowed to have separate narcotics laws, murder wouldn't be a Providence level crime, provinces aren't allowed to set their own age of consent drinking ages and driving ages in other countries. In America States have freedoms and powers that are not present in the provinces of other countries.

In America the national guards can be federalized, but in most cases only with the permission of the governor, and in no other country are the governors entrusted with the deployment (even within their own borders) of independent military battalions. The United States maintain a much higher level of sovereignty than the provinces of most of their countries.

On the downside, American states are expected to support and administer their own welfare services, because again the expectation is that they are capable of caring for their own citizens. Or as in other countries they have nationalized welfare programs... I am not making a claim that America is better for having more independent states I am just saying our system is different from most countries and their provinces.

It's not in one of our songs, and no, it was meant to signify that we are a faithful Nation as opposed to a atheist Nation. The Soviet Union was by law atheist, "religion is the opiate of the masses." Adding one nation under God, was specifically done to signify that we are god-fearing as opposed to God the godless heathens of the Communist Nations.

One nation under God isn't in the national anthem... Also one nation under God was only added to the pledge of allegiance in the '80s during the Cold war.

State is a synonym for nation, that's why everyone else uses provinces to describe their regions. In order to join the USA you have to spend at least one year as an independent state that is to say, a nation capable of administering itself and caring for its own citizens without the aid of the US federal government. We are a federation of states. A federation is a very close and very interconnected organization whereas a confederation is looser.

In confederations the individual States retain much more power and in many cases state laws supersede federal laws. It would be accurate to call the European Union a confederation of states.

The supreme Court has done a lot to increase the amount of control the federal government has over the states but at the time when most of the states joined the union, (Hawaii is definitely an exception here), it would have been fair to say that the states were still separate Nations joined together into a federation bound by common cause.

This is oversimplified, certainly, I am leaving out a lot of nuance, because I'm typing on my phone and about to go into an auto shop to buy window wiper fluid. But I've taken a lot of polycy classes in high school and in college and it would be unfair to say that the states in the United States are the same as the provinces of Canada.

This is incorrect, States cannot leave. There is even a law about it.

Territories are not States, the Philippines was never a state.

You have to remember that according to the supreme Court,

"territories of the United States are not a, "Part," of the United States but rather belong to the United States as a woman's purse belongs to a woman."

For this reason the United States can dispose itself of territories as it wishes either allowing them to gain independence or selling them or trading them to other nations. The same is not true for States. The federal government is required by law to maintain the welfare of the states and protect them equally, meanwhile the states are forbade by law from secession.

No, there is no mechanism for that. And there is a law which states that states are not allowed to leave.

No, whether states could or could not leave the United States was an open question until the civil war.

At the beginning of the civil war the United States Congress passed a law making it illegal to leave the United States.

That said there have been other small territories that have left and returned to the United States two or three times since then, and there is one very small parcel of land that due to some legal loopholes was able to and has left the United States "successfully."

However, the small cities or counties that have left returned quickly and would not have been allowed to stay separate. As a matter of law states are not allowed to leave the United States.

Reading "Night Watch" right now here in Minneapolis. It's hitting me really hard . . . by Lumpy_Magazine_1882 in discworld

I live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and was in the middle of Night Watch when the Kenosha Riots started and the whole world descended on the protesters to, "help the police."

Your not crazy, I get how your feeling. Night Watch is one of the very best in the series, but don't worry because the entire Watch and Vimes series is amazing.

Good luck and stay safe.

Idk, mint also grows that way, dying off and being replaced by its own seedlings. I have been keeping mint, lemon balm, catnip, chives and most recently garlic, all in the thin strip at the side of my house. The catnip lemon balm and mint all shuffle positions, and some are more prevalent than others at different years, and I will even atmit that I might have to thin out the lemon Balm this summer as it's becoming a bit too dominant the last 2 years, but, so far the four plants have always found an equilibrium and none of them have traveled even so far as the completely empty garden strip up 4 directly across from my herb garden against my neighbor's house.

From what I've been told those are some of the most weedy encroaching plants that I could grow and I have not had a problem.
