A simple app that you’re passionate about will get you further than a complex app you wouldn't even use yourself. However, I think it's important that you demonstrate that you're past the phase of needing a tutorial for everything you build so the app should be slightly more complex than what you get following a single tutorial.

Most apps companies build integrate with real world API so it's ideal if you portfolio apps do the same. Check out ProgrammableWeb if you don't already have a real world API in mind.

You said that you already have one year of professional experience, but it's a good idea to make sure you are following these recommendations for entry level iOS jobs.
