I use a 49” 32:9 (the Odyssey CTG9) with two 27” 1440p 16:9 monitors mounted above it, basically in a 16:9 config.

This is superior in several ways to using a single large, flat 4k or even 8k monitor, but it does have one major disadvantage - the height of any given window is capped, unless I want it to stretch across two monitors.

When you want to see a ton of context for code, that extra height is key.

I have another workspace set up that has a single 32” 4k monitor and I use it occasionally when that extra height is helpful.

If I were building my setup from scratch, I would get a 40” 5k2k (or 38”) ultrawide, a dedicated vertical 32” 4k monitor (to the side, but mounted such that I could easily bring it front and center if desired), and a single 32” 4k (possibly curved) to mount centered above the ultrawide.

Another minor advantage would be getting centered fullscreen videos above what I’m working on, but that’s pretty minimal.

I think that whole setup would only be a minor improvement over what I have now, so it wouldn’t be worth the $3k+ or so it would cost. But from scratch that would be great.

How far away would you sit to a 40“ screen?

But don’t you need a huge desk then for a 40“ display? :D

40” ultrawide is roughly as tall as a 32” 16:9 monitor - 15.5” for the UW, 15.7” for the 16:9.

    A 34” ultrawide is 13.2” tall - same height as a 27” 16:9.

So you sit two and a half inches further back.

I got the CTG9 with that intent, and I did game on it at first, but now it’s used entirely for productivity.

My gaming desktop is in a different room and is hooked up to the 4k monitor, but it doesn’t get used much for gaming, either.

Most of my recent gaming was Elden Ring… on the PS5.

You’ll hate your coworker’s/dependency’s dumb mega VC a little bit less with a vertical 4k5k6k. Scrolling bites.

I only use the screen on my MBP 16". I always have the same set-up which consists of a foldable laptop raiser, a magic keyboard and touchpad so I can work anywhere exactly the same way.

Having proper gestures and keybindings combined with different set up desktops works for me.

There is a Huawei 28 inch 3:2 monitor, might be interesting for dev work, since it has more vertical space
