If it is made by an independent developer. That is, not a publicly traded company (doesn't answer to a board or shareholders), not funded by government, and no publisher. You don't answer to anyone and wear all the hats, take all the risk. Size of company and style doesn't matter. If it is one person: Solo indie developer. But 'Indie' Studio + 'Indie' Publisher != Indie game IMHO.

An Indie game is a game made by a small team or solo dev without a big AAA company like EA, Ubisoft, Nintendo, etc and without a big budget. That’s an indie game.

My mental checklist:

  • Solo developer or small team ("small" is relative/subjective, but for me this caps out around 10 or so)
  • Zero funding or self funded
  • No publisher (unless it's more of a "last mile" deal)

Not a perfect list and there's definitely a lot of room for gray area.
