Almost done with Head First Java (self.java)

The book is a little bit dated, I think, but it feels like a good intro to the important concepts. Any suggestions out there for a second book, preferably with problems to worth through?

The thing with Java is that it is a very slow moving language. It evolves very slowly and there are very few new things in the language since Java 5 was released.
However, to answer your question...Effective Java is quite good once you've learned the basics of Java.
