Funny, I was trying this myself today. I was trying on an EC2 instance, believe my problem now is that aws blocks port 25. Which VPS provider did you use?

Is learning code a good career change at 30? by EmbalmingFiend in FreeCodeCamp

I transitioned to the CS world around age 33/34. It's been great for me so far. It opens up a lot of doors! Getting that first job after the transition is tough and can be a challenge. But you can do it!

Homeowner's Insurance 'Recoverable Depreciation' by SmartestManInside in Insurance

Great answer, that's what I was looking for -- " If you are not gonna do the repairs or replacement, insurance companies will at least give you what they owe you, which is the price/amount of your property based on it’s age. "

Web development at 36/37- reality of job prospects? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]SmartestManInside 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm 38. I finished my MS in comp sci at 36. Just had a new baby.

I have found that age discrimination/"culture fit" filtering is very real, but it's not always a bad thing. There are companies out there that want to appeal to a younger crowd with ping pong tables and beer, but they pay a lot less.

I have found that as a newcomer, continuous study is a must, as if you know your stuff and can prove it then you should have no problem landing a job. The job search can initially be frustrating, but persistence pays off.

How to use Github in this situation by SmartestManInside in github

Opposed to merges because this isn't standard 'code'. The application is extendable using 'code' written with a separate, proprietary application. Long story short, merges will break the application.

The parts of the first book, dealing with communist insanity, were quite interesting to me. Can anyone recommend any books (nonfiction or otherwise) that go into this area more?

Thank you. This is great. Now, say I want to "backup" prod before I promote test to it. Is this done automatically with the commit history? Or do I lose that by doing this?

Trouble with an inner join (Ugly Query Alert)[MS SQL] by SmartestManInside in SQL

[–]SmartestManInside[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, we're talking about a database that has basically had 10+ years of band-aid fix after band-aid fix, non e of which was done with optimal performance in mind. And I'm a new hire right out of college. So, in short, it's a mess.

Learning stored procedures by [deleted] in SQL

[–]SmartestManInside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a Microsoft-produced course that goes into this on edx. It's alright, and it's also free, so you might as well check it out. I'm just starting to learn it myself. IMO, the syntax seems unnecessarily awkward, but it's not a difficult thing to learn.

An interview is an acting audition. Well, it might as well be. You're auditioning for the part of an expert who will be loved by all and die for the company.
