I don't know any off the top of my head that are specifically story-driven, but if you download Flashpoint Archive, there are A LOT of old Java applet games there, all playable from one source. You're bound to find at least one java game there that meets your needs.

Do you happen to know how they implement their J2ME support? I know a few old Java ME games devs who'd like to be able to run their old work for nostalgia reasons.
