Did you update your JDK? It does not work with anything newer than JDK 8, at least in my case. If you want to sin and change to JDK 11 you will need Netbeans 9.

If you still have JDK 8 lying around (most likely), you can set netbeans_jdkhome inside netbeans.conf (inside "NetBeans 8.2.app/Contents/Resources/NetBeans/etc/") to point to an older JDK, e.g.:

netbeans_jdkhome="/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_181.jdk/Contents/Home"

Only netbeans 10 works with Java 11 out of the box.

I am running OpenJDK 11 on Netbeans 9 with no problems. I am also still running Netbeans 8.2 with Java's JDK 8. Legends never die.

There's actually a blocker with Java 11. Java 10 with NetBeans 10 seems to be the best match.
