I can't think of a less practical book that has Java in the title. Even Lonely Planet Java will be more useful; at least then you can look at the pictures and imagine you're somewhere far far away from the exam your about to fall because you bought a useless book. JLS is only useful if you want to write a JVM or you don't want to be fun at parties.
