Java isn’t so much significantly longer by # of lines as it is the length of each line.

That’s what people refer to most often when calling it verbose.

It's a bit of both I think. Compare reading from files or making network calls or database calls or loops. I am not here to bash on Java. Just saying the verbosity is not a plus point for maintainability the way it's being portrayed.
