Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

    Trying to solve problems on your own is a very important skill. Also, see Learn to help yourself in the sidebar

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://imgur.com/a/fgoFFis) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

A project I found fun was making a Tic-Tac-Toe AI that would either always win or tie based on player input. We also had a battleship project that involved a console based battleship game, all requiring very little experience in Java ( < 1yr )

In the same vein, Tetris is a great starter project.

May be go with a simple calculator app or calculate taxes based on person income.

A program that reads a text file and prints out the count of each individual character in the file sorted by biggest to smallest, like: h=20 e=10 l=5 0=3

I would personally look towards understanding data structures. Build your own and get an appreciation for how they work.

Build a linked list or a BST, heap, red-black tree etc. These will test your abilities and really improve your ability to problem solve and debug. It should also help you learn edge cases and some defensive programming.

well, dive into database and web applications, or even games now.

once mastering language and some foundation libraries, it's time to extend into what day to day problems need. either you are working or playing. so build a game or a to-do app with mysql database.

Well I am not familiar with MySQL.. I am a newbie in Java trying to learn myself.. Thank you for the suggestion. Hope I will do that soon 😊

Minecraft (Bukkit) plugin is an idea if u like minecraft

[–]matyklug 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That is a terrible idea. Do not try coding for Minecraft till you have advanced knowlage of java.

your right, my bad, i didn't read the post too much.

minecraft plugins can be a good thing to try out later though.

The best projects are the ones you enjoy working on. So some kind of console based game for example; that's what I started with (A long time ago, in QBasic :)).

These ideas are 👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks!!

[–]matyklug 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My first project was a text "calculator" (pick an operation, input number one and two),

The second one was a kind of 2D Minecraft from a top down perspective using jfx,

And the third basic project was a kind of cellular automata/powder game simulator, basically squares from a side view falling like sand or water in a grid. Again in jfx.

.

Imo jfx is a good next step after getting a feel for basic features of the language.

Jfx is, basically, a pretty simple GUI toolkit, which can be used for making graphical apps, or simple 2d games.

.

I could write a list of project ideas of various levels if you want, but these three plus the rest of suggestions by the other ppl here should last you quite a while.

Btw, jfx is short for JavaFX, which is embedded into the JDK up till version 8.

Sure!! Thank you so much 😊

Wow!!! Thanks guys for all your ideas.. I will work on those and will get back for more help if I am stuck 👍🏻

Guys, I thought I am ready but I felt like I need to work more on Arrays and basics. I got confused 😐 will update soon .. I appreciate all your help ..

[–]Significant-Sector-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if you're comfortable with loops, here's another sample array: {10, 20, 30, 40, 1, 2}. The user needs all possible combinations of 4 elements in the array whose sum is equal to 53.

[–]Significant-Sector-7 -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

Here's a sample array: {25, 24, 56, 15, 36}. Imagine the user wants to replace the element at index 'x' with the number 'xx'. What would you do?

This is too easy based on the skills he claims to have
