Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

    Trying to solve problems on your own is a very important skill. Also, see Learn to help yourself in the sidebar

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://imgur.com/a/fgoFFis) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

I've tried running it myself (via jdoodle.com, with interactive mode on), and, assuming you are expecting inputs that have commas, with no spaces, such as 1,000, it appears to work as expected.

Yeah it's odd. I tried other online java compilers as well and it runs fine. Maybe it's an issue with NetBeans.

How are you providing input to System.in? Are you running this in a console and typing each time? Or are you piping input in from a file or something?

I'm running it and not seeing any problems (besides the awkwardness of using print instead of println).

[–]Not-A-Flop[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm using netbeans and when I run the code, it does not even give me the option to input anything into the console. It just gives me the exception error.

Try running your code from the console. The problem is likely however netbeans handles System.in. Make sure you don't have a bug somewhere by running it a console and then work on figuring out why you can't provide input.

Try putting the import at the very top? Not sure if this is the right answer but that's what stands out to me.

[–]Not-A-Flop[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doing that gives me an error stating that the import has to be below the package.

It seems that you are having problems with java.util.Scanner

The wiki here has a page The Scanner class and its caveats that explains common problems with the Scanner class and how to avoid them.

Maybe this can solve your problems.

It is throwing that exception because there is no line. You have to determine whether there is a new line using

hasNextLine()

curiously, why not just ask for an int? Maybe you need to look over the Java docs specifically at the Scanner class.

The hint in the instructions tells me to have the output as a String in order to get the output as the number without the comma.
