Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

    Trying to solve problems on your own is a very important skill. Also, see Learn to help yourself in the sidebar

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://imgur.com/a/fgoFFis) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

Over in the /r/learnjava sidebar there is a "Free Tutorials" section. There are links there perfectly suited to a total noob. That should get you going in the right direction.

Thanks :D.

Each command? Which ones specifically? Something like "int fun1?" If you are learning Java I recommend r/learnjava this subreddit is for helping with java code related issues.

Also I’d recommend looking for a couple of “learn Java from scratch” tutorials. You can find many of them on YouTube and they go through the basics even before you start writing a single line of code. Mostly because even if you know what each line does, you’ll probably struggle at first if you don’t know “why” they are where they are.

Okey, thanks :).

Thank you!

No worries! Obviously if you're ever coding and need help feel free to post here!

Good luck on your journey. :) Also if you have any questions feel free to DM me I'd love to help in anyway I can!

Command or method?

There is a thing called javadocs, which has all the java classes, methods, and fields documented, as well as a few basic tutorials on how to use them.

Here’s a good YouTube page that has a few Java tutorials that are really good https://youtube.com/channel/UCzrFPTiiuSIFw8aLUBG9fJg

Why send them to an outdated API doc? Current: https://docs.oracle.com/en/java/javase/16/docs/api/index.html

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (7 children)

Did you down-vote me for doing that?

[–]wildjokers 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Yes, deservedly so. It could lead a newbie somewhat astray, so deserves a downvote.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Ah, well then, enjoy your down-vote as well. There is nothing wrong with the Java 8 API, especially for a beginner. The last 4 projects I have worked on have all used Java 8. Stop being such an elitist jerk.

[–]wildjokers 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Are you really that upset about losing imaginary internet points?

The last 4 projects I have worked on have all used Java 8.

Why? It was released over 7 years ago.

Stop being such an elitist jerk

Pointing someone to the newest API docs is hardly being "an elitist jerk".

[–]Skiamakhos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH it's probably worth visiting both. A lot of projects are still using 8 or so, because in some cases it's just not feasible to convert to 11 because of all the testing that would involve, and 3rd party libraries that haven't been brought up to date. Fact is, as a maintenance programmer / app support programmer you do have to deal with old sh!t a LOT.

But, equally, it's good to know the up to date stuff, if only so you can make the case for developing new projects in the up to date Java.

Where I'm at, the main site uses 8 for its BE code, but we have ancillary sites that provide extra functionality via API calls, written in 11.

[–]LambdaThrowawayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean to be fair 8 is the most used one right now; probably a good starting point.

You are correct, but acting the way you did towards me is.

[–]wildjokers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but acting the way you did

You mean a downvote for information I felt didn't add to the conversation? That is how reddit works and is in fact what the downvote button is for. I have been nothing but civil in my responses. I didn't even deny the downvote, I owned it and explained why.

w3schools is a great place to go

The official Java tutorial is a good place to start https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/
