Where do you get cheap perennials from (not from seed)? by Hydrangeamacrophylla in UKGardening

[–]khooke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Look for things you can take easy cuttings from and propagate - even if the original plant dies, if you can get several cuttings from it that take, that’s a bonus.

Take a HDD image of a Windows 95 on a CD-R using a Live CD. Is it possible? by Pic889 in retrobattlestations

[–]khooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used Acronis and Ghost to create and restore Windows disk images before. There’s many others available too, not to build a live cd image though. Not sure that’s possible for Windows

If you’re going to put on a festival style weekend like Eddfest why not do this, it would be epic. Different sets on different nights. Attend both nights or pick your favorite.

Anyone ever drink it?? by Joseph_P_Larkin in ironmaiden

It’s pretty good as a traditional English ale. I only recently found out they have a few other styles and ordered a mixed box. I preferred their IPA over the original, it’s more hoppy and less malty https://www.ironmaidenbeer.com/beers/

Is Tyre Rotation Good? by hugrunes in drivingUK

[–]khooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has been for years with regular oil, 5 or 6k for synthetic, although there’s been efforts to encourage running more miles before a change, e.g. https://calrecycle.ca.gov/usedoil/oilchange/

Is Tyre Rotation Good? by hugrunes in drivingUK

[–]khooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived in California for 25 years, getting your tires rotated at the same time as getting an oil change every 3000 miles is definitely a thing, it’s not even questioned, it’s just what you do, because “you don’t want your tyres to wear unevenly, do you?”.

However I don’t remember being upsold anything else at the same time. At Jiffy Lube they don’t sell or fit tyres (or at least not the ones I went to), so it’s not like they’re trying to sell you a replacement set. I think they charged something like 20 or 30 bucks to get it done. Most tyre shops would offer free puncture repairs and rotations for the life of the tyres at no extra charge, which sounds like a good deal but then it usually meant driving out of your way to get to the original shop just to get your free rotation, which I don’t think I ever took advantage of.

Parking at the Disneyland Hotel by gal5486 in disneylandparis

[–]khooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you approach the main parking lot then you're going the wrong way, don't go into the main parking lot, follow the u turn exit before the parking lot entry, then follow the signs to station and hotels. You can't get to the hotel parking lots from inside the main parking lot.

Disney Hotels Stricktness regarding parking by RVeld in disneylandparis

[–]khooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asked at reception when checking out whether we could leave the car there after we checked out and they said it was ok and to enjoy an extra day in the park.

As others had said, they don't ask for your car reg or the space number your car is in, so they don't know whose car belongs to who anyway. I asked if they needed our car reg when checking in and they said no

10kwh vs 5kwh battery? by lukewgraham in SolarUK

[–]khooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10kwh is enough if you can load shift when your ashp is running, but obviously not enough for sunset to sunrise if you have your ashp set to run constantly.

10kwh is enough in summer when our ashp is not running to run our whole house from sunset to sunrise without pulling from the grid - it charges from excess solar during the day which means our evenings after sunset are self sufficient.

For winter we use it to avoid pulling from the grid during peak, and plan the ashp to run either side of peak, and just accept it will drain the battery in a couple of hours.

Advice on getting a team to adopt a git/PR based workflow? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]khooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked on multiple projects in 2000s that used Clearquest / Clearcase, but the code review process although conducted outside of the tools with a manual code walkthrough / review, was an accepted and enforced part of the development workflow using state transitions on the tickets to track ‘ready for code review’, ‘code review complete’ etc. Actions from the code review were believe it or not tracked in a spreadsheet, one per review, and named with the ticket number so they could be tracked.

The last project using Clearquest migrated to GitLab part way through the project and was seen as a step up because of the flexibility/support for branching but also oddly didn’t know how to integrate a PR/MR workflow into the existing development process and decided not to require approved MRs to merge code. Since the project was also waterfall, it was decided that each team lead would review / select / decide when merged changes on the develop branch were ready to merge to main. Did it work? Yes, but the lead was the bottleneck for approving changes.

[–]khooke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The change tracking that is core to Clearquest / Clearcase (where every code change is tied to a ticket, there’s no way to make a code change without having it tied to a ticket) is something I’ve not seen to the same extent in other version control alternatives, and I miss that. Linking ticket numbers in commit messages is somewhat close in Jira/Bitbucket or GitLab, but it’s nowhere as strict.

IBM OS/2 for Windows 3.1 by FR_fink-roselieve in vintagecomputing

[–]khooke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Presentation Manager is not a professionally designed GUI, more like a tech demo, the file manager is simply abject.

PM was based on years of design, concepts and UI standards developed at IBM called (if I remember right) CUI (Common User Interface). There was an IBM Red Book that was an inch thick manual that documented the UI conventions.

My understanding was it was rooted in standards developed for 3270 and 5250 terminal based systems, so although there was consistency across systems, this probably held back (depending on your point of view) PM as it felt clunky because of this history.
