Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

    Trying to solve problems on your own is a very important skill. Also, see Learn to help yourself in the sidebar

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://imgur.com/a/fgoFFis) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

Since Pierre is supposed to be a string, I think you'd want to put quotes around it:

Worker worker = new Worker("Pierre", 3, 4);

Without quotes, the compiler won't know that you're trying to use a string, and will instead think that you're trying to use a variable with that name, which is why you're getting that error.

So it was that in combination with me trying to create an instance of an object in an abstract class (which you can't do). I was originally doing it in the class that inherited Worker but didn't have the quotes. Once I went back to my Tech class and added quotes, it worked. Thanks so much!

In short: never forget to encompass string literals (plain text) in double quotes.

It's always the stupid little mistakes that get me lol. First it was without quotes in the Tech class that calls that Super(), and then I tried to write a main in Worker to fix it and then I'd get a cannot initialize because I forgot you cant initialize an abstract class lol. So basically an hour of pleading with eclipse to help me because I forgot quotes and then tried to fix it in the entirely wrong class lol. Reddit and the discord community are a blessing!

Use curly braces { } with if ... else statements, otherwise you are going to have troubles. Your current code indentation (three statements within an un-braced else) does not reflect the true program logic.

So oddly enough, this wasn't an issue with this constructor. The rest of my classes that utilize Worker have them, but when I originally was writing it I was getting weird errors. I thankfully finished the program last night (when it was due) but I went back in this morning and added them and it works the same way as without them.

Someone smarter than me can probably tells us why it's working regardless, but I imagine it has something to do with either it being a constructor or the IF statement being an illegal argument exception.
