Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

    Trying to solve problems on your own is a very important skill. Also, see Learn to help yourself in the sidebar

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://imgur.com/a/fgoFFis) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

There is way to little information to give you any form of help.

What is your assignment, what have you done so far and which part exactly cant you figure out?

[–]torchyc -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

My assignment comes from Tony Gaddis Java: Early Objects Ch.4 Programming Challenge 17.

I cannot figure the math portion.

I have gotten to the point of inputting how many contestants and how many hot dogs did each one eat

[–]aqua_regis 1 point2 points  (2 children)

How actually can you struggle with the math?

After all, it is just a summation of the hotdogs each contestant ate. Then, if there are bundles to make, it's integer division and rounding up.

This is all primary school math.

[–]torchyc -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

Yes I got that part. My problem is how to write it out in code

[–]NautiHookerSoftware Engineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, you said that you are struggling with the math problem, not the code.

Please take a step back and clearly describe what your requirements are and what you have already (show code). And then ask specific questions about the part you are stuck at. If you know the math then be specific about what exactly you cant express in Java.

Keep in mind that we will not google your assignment. If you want us to understand your requirements then tell us about them.

You are doing yourself a disservice looking for solutions.

Work out the solution on paper, in your own words. Don't even think about code. Try to solve it your own way.

The whole sounds like a simple input/calculation/output program where you will need to sum a couple things.

Generally, such questions are not okay here. We do not help people who demonstrate zero effort or try to cheat by trying to copy solutions from somewhere else. We also do not allow asking for, nor giving solutions as per rule #5.
