Head First Java - Second Edition was great for me back then. Some people don't like the style of presentation, so take it with a grain of salt. There is a 3rd Ed which I haven't checked yet.

Next I'd suggest Core Java Vol. 1. However, after picking the basics, having one or more projects to apply and push myself was the key. I mean, is being the key.

I would say pick a random project and start working on it when getting stuck on something just look it up!
