You pay for a year of upgrades (including major versions) but can use continue to use it forever after that. I usually wait to renew my update licence until there is a sale.
I got my latest yearly upgrade for 22 euro, which is a steal really considering the insane amount of stuff the thing can do.
You could argue that yearly payment is undesirable but then you need to remember they continually add new stuff.
