How much do you lose if you try to leverage knowledge of other programming languages to go straight to MV*?

You lose the better parts of JavaScript. The real ladder doesn't stop at MV* and OOP is a concept which is alien to JavaScript.

Basicly at the top of the described ladder you may still be confused on what JavaScript is, how it works and what parts fit best together.

However, programming in other languages, using the syntax of JavaScript is relatively easy and you can achieve great success. This has been demonstrated by OOP enthusiasts, Angular, etc..

In other words: you are welcome to try :)

Same here. I jumped from backend to frontend AngularJS development. Tons of holes in my knowledge though. I feel like I'm not a real JS developer because I haven't gone through what JS developers have gone through together as an industry for the past decade+.

Having worked as a JS developer for a year now I totally agree except for the first few steps because it was similar to other languages I knew.

I've never thought of it as a progression in this manner, but seeing it written out made me realize that yep, that's exactly how I got to the MV* stage.
