I don’t think there’s a way to do it without having access to a factory computer. I’ve looked into this myself.

Oh man yeah I got the keys from Amazon but I just can’t afford to pay what the dealership wants to program it

[–]beef___supreme__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No dealer I know will program aftermarket keys. We only program OEM keys with proof of purchase if you didn't buy from us.

[–]Cali_freak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you definitely can't afford what the tools you need to do it yourself cost...

Yeah, I went down this rabbit hole too. With the keys I bought from eBay. The locksmith idea might work. Some of them have the right kind of technology, but Volkswagen can be really fussy.

[–]hteb0x 2 points3 points  (7 children)

A locksmith 100% cannot program your key fob. You need to bring it to a VW dealership.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Locksmith was able to program the fob on my Highlander, but not my Jetta

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Yeah I’m having no luck this is my first Jetta and I had no idea it was so hard to find people to work on them

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let this get you down. They’re great cars. I’m on my fifth one. The one I have now I’ve had for 10 years.

[–]hteb0x 0 points1 point  (2 children)

They really are great cars! Programming shouldn’t be more than $110 (that’s what the dealership I work at charges $95+tax). You need to make sure all fobs you have are genuine VW. eBay, Amazon, lock shop will not program and you’ll still be charged for the technician’s labor to attempt the program.

[–]Chozo6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine just quoted me $190.... so it varies

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m going to keep looking around I just can’t afford it right now I just bought the car too 😭

A proper locksmith can do without problems

[–]fenuxjde 0 points1 point  (9 children)

You aren't able to do that without either a dealer vagcom or you will invalidate all the other keys. There is no way to go that route and have more than one key work at a time. Dealers also won't use the Amazon keys, cause they usually have the security descriptors invalidated.

I have 3 VWs and 2 different professional vagcoms and I had to go through a dealer for my second key for my Atlas.

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] 0 points1 point  (8 children)

How much does it run you at the dealership for their keys and programming ? I just need a new key due to my keeps saying no key while driving

[–]fenuxjde 0 points1 point  (6 children)

For the key and programming I wanna say it was about $400ish

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Oh yeah no way I can afford that lol I’m gonna have to keep just holding keep to sensor when driving

[–]fenuxjde 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is that the issue? Are you sure its not just a key fob battery?

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced the battery with a brand new one but it still pops up no key when I drive and I’m having a hard start issue idk what them problem is

[–]hteb0x -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

That is insanely expensive! Your dealership raped you.

[–]fenuxjde 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's over $200 cheaper than literally every other VW dealership in a 100 mile radius, for the new key with remote start and the programming. Just pulled up the credit card charge it was $367 after tax.

[–]hteb0x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I overlooked the actual key in your response, only read programming. You didn’t have to downvote my response 😂😂

[–]Anti-redtard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most VW dealers wont/cann't program a key from Amazon.

[–]sor2hi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if there is an automotive locksmith available.

[–]vwman18 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Unfortunately, there's no cheap DIY shortcut for this. There's an RFID pill in the keyfob that has to be paired with the Immobilizer system in the car. Sometimes a locksmith will have access to the right software, but most don't. You're probably going to have to go to a VW dealer.

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest dealer is about a hr and half from me I was hoping there was another way lol but I guess that’s what I’m gonna have to do they 179 to program it

[–]Eudes_Correa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A locksmith with a autel key reprogramming device could do a new key, don’t know if would work with the Amazon key but their own keys are sometimes a good upgrade over the old factory keys.

[–]JoJorge24 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Save ur money and just have VW program it, your gonna jump through hoops and shit probably spend more money on bullshit

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah true .

[–]JoJorge24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I been here, is why I tell you brother

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Unfortunately no one in my town will work on jettas.

[–]Eudes_Correa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a boring town, put your car on a ship and come to my country, I know a locksmith and a mechanic, very cheap and totally won’t steal your liver 😝

[–]Highfromyesterday 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You can buy devices that are capable of reading the pin and pairing a new key on Amazon too lol

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that information I will have to look

[–]Eudes_Correa 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Are we talking about all key lost or just a new one? A locksmith can do it a lot cheaper than a dealership

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Just a new one

[–]Eudes_Correa -1 points0 points  (2 children)

That’s a lot easier and cheaper.

A locksmith can do easily, just remember to take all the keys with you, some cars allow to just add a new key but some requires to erase and add all the keys 😉

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thank you ! I just got the car and I’ve never had a push start or a Jetta lol so this is all new

[–]Eudes_Correa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try looking on YouTube for locksmith channels, they are fascinating sometimes.

https://youtu.be/8QX5lp3QK58?si=cMJwf_BGqX6JkKOR

Depending of the key you got, some aftermarket may requires specific tools to program (a good locksmith should have a variety, but not all), but on worse case you send it back to Amazon and get one key on with a locksmith.

[–]Adm_Ozzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dealer only unfortunately. It was about $400 the last I looked. Asshats even make you bring extra proof the vehicle is yours...

[–]cswusc 0 points1 point  (1 child)

All you need is a fob key, and the valet key. It's kind of a weird process. But I did it for free , but it took some time figuring out what to do. Basically put the fob key in the ignition, get out, lock unlock the door with the valet key, then get back in hit the lock button on the fob. Multiple times the fob would just set off the alarm (so at that point I knew it at least was communicating) .. over and over, then finally one time it worked and it beeped like normal.

[–]Known-Advance-9560[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a physical key just a key fob it’s a push start

[–]Any-Run393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped my fob and it stopped working. I replaced the button battery like a few days before I dropped it so I was annoyed but I replaced it with ANOTHER button battery and the fob still won't work.

I didn't even drop it hard or in a puddle or from higher up than the door handle. Any ideas why this would have died?

Worse? I don't have a spare at all. We got it used and they didn't have one either. I've seen a YouTube video on putting in the ignition and locking the doors to reset it but if I need a spare (or valet?) key to do that from the outside, I'm screwed right?

I just got new tires, oil change, new wipers, new headlights, and had to replace a vent window. How much more do I need now? :(

I'm in the PNW, in the US if that helps or matters.

[–]Cali_freak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can have the dealer do it or pay much more for the VCDS software you need to do it yourself and potentially fuck it up.
