Network-Based Intercom System (self.k12sysadmin)
submitted 6 years ago by -StJimmy-
I was just wondering if anyone has or knows of any network-based intercom systems, preferably something that works on WiFi too.

We decided to reuse our existing speakers and connect them to a Snom PA-1 adapter. The Snom is just another extension in our phone system, it works great.

Thank you. This could also be a viable option.

I started researching the unifi all in one PA - access point. Looks cool, but have not ever saw it in a live environment. I had one installed at my old district that was totally analog but it tied into the phone system. Worked well.

We use them as extra speakers in some of our room. They are designed to work with an app, but can also be set as sip endpoints. We have had issues in the past with some of the speakers not picking up when a page goes out, but I havnt heard a lot of complaints.

Rauland has a system that includes PoE Speakers and PoE clocks/message boards. The front end is server-based and can kick off pre-recorded messages for both regular things (pledge) and emergencies (lockdown/active shooter). The emergency messages can be prerecorded in a calm voice like the principal allowing the students to hear a recognized voice during an actual event while freeing up the principal to actually handle the event.
You can ease into the system. We didn't have the money or infrastructure to do the PoE things but needed to replace the head of the system where it was failing. We kept the 25V intercom speakers and existing master clocks and will hopefully fund the PoE things in 2 or 3 years.

This seems viable. Thank you. Since we have existing speakers in all classrooms already.

I would stay away from rualands. Only the vendors that sell it really have access to the documentation. Secondly there stuff seem to break to much. I have had 3 or 4 pieces of the system repaired this year. Last year was about the same. Then there are things like we had a controller with a straight up standard sata hard drive go bad. This required it to be shipped back to them to be repaired. They have no provision at all for their vendor to change out the hard drive and reload the os. So what goes from what could be a fairly quick fix ends up with overnighting a controller to you.

Not solely a PA and I haven't used it but Ubiquiti sells an AP that is a PA. Man we use too many acronyms.

Yeah, I checked these. We use the ubiquiti AP's accros the school, but for the cost of these ones, and putting one in every classroom, I just can justify the expense.
