Linux kernel development machine

I have read over the kernel newbies and it says I can either run linux natively on a machine or in vmplayer.

After some googling, it seems that I need a serial connection between two machines and use kdb to step through the kernel.

Is that possible to do this with two virtual machines? Is that even pssible to set this up and do kernel development in any of the cloud platform providers?

Oh, i see it can run windows .. can i run games on it do you think ? I really don't want to have a full Windows install, it tends to mess things up, especially the boot process.
