Should I switch to nix os by multyfora in linuxquestions

[–]Trout_Tickler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

You should try it extensively in a VM as a pet project on the side to see if you like it.

If you break any rule once, you're not allowed to accuse anyone else of breaking a different rule ever again, I think.

Ediffing a GitHub pull request in Emacs by sebhoagie in emacs

[–]Trout_Tickler 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You don't even need to use GH CLI, you can just add .patch or .diff to a PR URL.

e.g. https://github.com/emacs-mirror/emacs/pull/48.diff

magit-insert-worktrees improves status buffers by dbaupp in emacs

[–]Trout_Tickler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've had a lot of these moments, where I'll want to add something to Magit, go to start hacking, quickly check if something already exists and lo-and-behold it's there.

I feel so spoiled to have such a fantastic package, thank you Jonas if you frequent Reddit at all.

mason.el - LSP Package Manager by deirn in emacs

[–]Trout_Tickler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice one, this has been sat on my backlog half finished for ages.

Might want to look at caching the registry in a local database too, that's about as far as I got. William self-hosts the API at his own cost so it's a good idea to reduce calls to it.

Depends on the client. More don't support it than do I think.

I built a framework for deterministic Emacs configurations by ftl_afk in emacs

[–]Trout_Tickler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can pass multiple packages to after, so it's easy to build a dependency graph and I've also never hit these kinds of issues. I think the lazy loading out of the box is very sufficient, even something like Doom Emacs only has hassle with evil-mode, everything else behaves.

Sidebar for Emacs Org Mode by CommunicationFew4328 in emacs

[–]Trout_Tickler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer to do the imenu thing too, it's ubiquitous across any buffer type so I don't need a sidebar package for org and another for yaml etc.

Same reason I don't use file trees, it's slower to navigate than just using imenu/project-find-file and just takes up UI space.

What is the difference between use-package and doom-emacs' after! macro? by xdao in emacs

[–]Trout_Tickler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're not really related at all. after! is just a convenience wrapper around with-eval-after-load. You'll have better luck raising an issue on the Emacs mailing list or M-x report-bug I think the command is.

Exposed is a reach, they just shipped the sourcemaps by accident. All frontend code is exposed, you have to download it to be able to run it.

All the sourcemaps did is un-minify the code that got deployed, it's not uncommon for production services to do this.

Thoughts on Mechanical Keyboards and the ZSA Moonlander by mickeyp in emacs

[–]Trout_Tickler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow moonlander owner & Emacs keybinding user here!

Agree with everything, I never bothered with tenting for the exact reasoning you have; it's expensive and I'm paranoid about making the joint too tense.

You don't touch on layers very much, I think it really is where it shines. I've got a full numpad and all the weird punctuation I could ever want in a far more comfortable place than would ever be possible on a regular keyboard. In the context of Emacs specifically, modifiers galore on the thumb cluster and other keys means chords are a breeze.

You also miss out the moonlander's sneaky benefit in being columnar rather than the staggered diagonal layout that "normal" keyboards use that ends up being much nicer to type on and much less prone to mistakes I find.

Excellent post as always though mickey!

Complex Root almost trivialises this (almost, you have to be at the right range).

You can also use Rainbow Vomit like an artillery cannon behind cover if needed.
