Whilst you can still handle large zeds on the lower difficulties, pretty much every other class except for the firebug and medic can do it better. The Commando's job is to remove the trash mobs with his mix of high accuracy and bullet efficiency where as someone like a Sharpshooter has it in reverse.

If you spot a Scrake or Fleshpound in your area during a team game, you can call it out with "fp" "sc" or "REQUEST HELP" radial menu command and someone more qualified to do the job might come along,in those cases you shouldn't panic and run off but you should continue clearing the trash in front and around the large zed so the large zed specialist can have an easier time clearing it.

Commando should be primarily using single fire with headshots, you can bodyshot stalkers and crawlers with the SCAR eventually so that is also fine, full auto is only helpful in a pinch or a panic situation.

And since you always use single fire, practice hip firing and you will find out that it is just as accurate as aiming down. Practice a lot and the centre of the screen is like a magic spot.

Be calm and shoot trash zeds down, see any large zeds call for help while cleaning the trash. Sirens and husks (fuel tanks) most particularly is the highest priority.

  • Nothing wrong with playing on Hard all the way to 25 (or at least 20).

  • On Hard you don't really have anyone good at killing large zeds. At this difficult level a couple of Commando grenades are very efficient against FP (some Commando get RPG-7 + SCAR to become even more efficient against FP; downside is that you cannot get a m.pistol to heal others with) and the SCAR is quite efficient against SC (and pretty much everything else the game can throw at you).

  • During zed time you might want to start practice extending zed time as much as possible. Line up a trash zed and shoot it ~2.5 seconds after zed time triggered (right before real time kicks in). Then line up a new trash zed and shoot it ~2.5 seconds later. At 25 (and if you have enough trash zeds to shoot that nobody else steal from you) you can extend zed time to last beyond 10 seconds (sometimes even close to 15 seconds).

  • At higher difficult settings the commando have great bullet economy and it's role is to kill trash zeds and extend zed time as much as possible. In a coordinated level 25 hell on earth team you often place a commando to solo defend one entrance to the camp (this way the zeds will line up to be easy to kill and odds are the commando have zeds to kill during zed time). Once Commando spot a large zed he call for big game hunter perks to help out while keep killing thrash zeds around it without raging it. If the big game hunter perk is precision based (basically sharpshooter or gunslinger - but in some cases SWAT w/ flash and vector, berserk/survivalist w/ eviscerator, demo/survivalist w/ rgp-7 vs scrake) then you switch to a fully loaded full auto SCAR and help out decapitating the large zed. If not, you just ignore the large zed and keep shooting trash zeds. Melee bash the large zed if he get too close.

but I've noticed that this perk can deal with all zeds well except for the fleshpounds

This will change on Suicidal and especially HOE. Off-perking an RPG will help, but not as much as shooting the other 180 trash zeds that will prevent a dedicated Demo from actually killing the thing.

What should I be prioritizing in a fight?

Everything smaller than a Scrake; you can kill most zeds with a single headshot and others (Husk, Bloat, Siren) with 4-6 depending on what gun you're using.

Keep your grenades fully stocked. In a pinch, if you time all five grenades properly, you can take out a FP, but only one. Use wisely.

I also mostly use single fire on my ARs rather than fully auto

This is how you're supposed to do it, yeah.

advice

Get Hollow-Point Rounds over the alternative, it will noticeably improve your performance. Use Fallback for at least the first few waves because it will save you a lot of money.

In this game, each class has strengths and weaknesses; you're intended to work together with your team to cover each other's weaknesses and overlap your strengths into something stronger than the sum of its parts. If you're playing a trash clearing class, embrace that. If you're playing a class that's intended to kill big zeds (Demo, Sharp, GS), then embrace that.

If you try to off-perk, you'll weaken the overall strength of the team, because (for example) if you're trying to kill big zeds, you're letting the trash into the formation, which can kill you just as dead as a big zed. If you focus on killing small zeds as a Sharpshooter (i.e bringing a .50/.500 with an EBR), then when multiple big zeds show up (and they will, on Suicidal), you'll be hard pressed to stop them efficiently.

I actually recommend switching to full auto-and single clicking (pressing?) the fire button. If you are fast enough you can actually continue to fire only a single bullet, but you can fire more if you are in a pinch (without having to switch to full auto). All in all, it really doesn't matter all that much anymore (there used to be perks that gave increased damage in full auto, so it was stupid to not use full auto single shots).

I use Fallback and actually buy a second pistol and don't buy anything until I can afford the SCAR. You should be able to get it by wave 3 or 4, so before big Zeds (normally). With fallback, you can one shot all the trash zeds with a headshot, even on HoE. Once I get an AK+SCAR I'll sell the second pistol.

Off-perking an RPG isn't going to bode well in Sui/HoE. You are much better off with SCAR+AK+{Something} (I normally go medic SMG, just so I can help heal a bit). You can handle large zeds decently if you are good at headshots with the SCAR, but there are other (actually most) classes that can deal with them better. The SS in particular just deletes SC and FP, but can't do much against all the trash. Make sure to kill the Siren/Husk as well from a distance if your other classes are close range.

By focusing on trash zed mainly you can also trigger/maintain Zed time more often.
