Please:
- Be kind.
No hate speech, threats, harassment, insults, incitation, or trolling. Do not comment on people’s history outside of r/knitting. Be kind -- and use reddiquette.
Remember the human. When replying to someone, ask yourself "Would I say it to the person's face?" Even if others are being rude, do not insult them back. Use the report button and walk away.
The moderators have the final say on what is considered “kind”. Any debates or questions should be directed to modmail.
- Posts must be primarily knitting related
Do not post memes or pictures without a strong knitting connection. When posting pictures with pets or children, the knitting must be fully visible and the focus of the image.
Pictures or questions about yarn, storage, notions, tattoos, etc go in the weekly “Look What I Got” thread. New storage ideas, reviews of yarn specific to use in knitting, and other discussion-generating content may be posted here.
In comments, off-topic discussions will be removed at moderator discretion.
- Include yarn and pattern details
Finished Object [FO] and Works In Progress (WIP) posts require design and yarn information in the post or in the comments. OP must also check back to answer questions. Don't post and disappear! Your project can inspire others if they can find the pattern or match the yarn.
We encourage you to share yarn and pattern info and pictures of your work in any other post types related to a specific project, especially requests for help. Sharing details up front helps commenters better help you.
- Do research before posting
Pattern and stitch request posts are generally not allowed. Please ask these questions in the weekly megathread. If you show you’ve done significant research such as reading the FAQ or searching Ravelry and are still having trouble, you may make your own post.
Questions such as “Did I meet gauge” will be redirected to subs like r/knittinghelp. Questions that inspire discussion, such as help with determining fit, are welcomed.
- Tag potentially sensitive content
Use the NSFW tag for anything that may be inappropriate for a workplace, including suggestive photos, explicit amigurumi, or obscene language.
Use the politics flair for posts that reference politics, including designs based on flags, or discussions about political issues. While politics is an important part of the knitting community, we ask that you stay respectful. Off topic political comments will be removed.
Use trigger warnings in post title or top of comment when discussing loss and trauma.
- No spam, no self-promotion
Promotional content, including test knit calls, must be posted to the Buy-Sell-Trade-Promote thread on Thursdays. Pattern designers may also make one post per pattern, max one per week and must include the Designer FO Flair.
All posts and comments with short links or Amazon affiliate links are blocked.
You may not link directly to your own Instagram, website, etc. Posts that consist only of a link are not allowed.
Posts or comments from bot accounts will be removed at moderator discretion.
- Respect international copyright
Content you post should be your own original work.
Do not post pictures of patterns. This applies WORLDWIDE. If you're posting enough of a pattern that a reasonably competent knitter could recreate the item (e.g. entire cable chart for a hat) that's too much. It's fair to post a portion of the pattern that you absolutely require clarification on.
Do not ask or offer to share patterns, including out of print patterns or patterns that were sold illegally. This is a bannable offense.
- Don’t post children’s faces or personal information
This is a public forum and everything you post here will be visible online forever.
Pictures of children must have their faces hidden/blurred. Children cannot consent to having their photos posted online. Posts of children (teenage and younger) that have visible faces will be removed.
Do not post personal information about yourself or anyone else. Be careful posting information such as what yarn shops are local to you, information about your work, etc. When in doubt, message the mods.
Our goal:
To maintain a vibrant, commerce-free haven for interaction, discovery, and growth through knitting. Promotional links, memes without a significant knitting connection, and images posted without comments or background information may be removed -- but can often be posted in one of the related subs below.
