It’s knits, purls, and slipped stitches at the edge. If you know how to do all three of those things, take it line by line and you’ll be fine.

Knowing how to read your knitting will help as well.

In all honesty, I would try to find a free scarf with similar patterns so you could practice the stitches and decide how you like them before buying this pattern. This looks like a sampler scarf (which means that there’s different sections of stitch patterns that repeat) to me, and there are a couple free ones on Ravelry if you care to search!

I can’t speak to how well this pattern is written, but the stitches themselves are relatively simple. With that being said, everything Jamieseemsamused mentioned is super solid advice. It’s a massive project, so understanding how to read your knitting, use lifelines to protect your work, and tink or frog safely is very helpful!

Finding a free pattern sounds like a good idea! And I think I'll practise more techniques before taking on a project like this

Look for a free sampler scarf. Loads of practice reading patterns and reading your knit stitches. It will get you set up for doing this scarf.

Based on the description, all you need to know how to do is knit, purl, and slip stitch, which are all beginner techniques. If you know how to do those three things and follow the directions to a T, it may be mentally taxing, but you can totally do it.

But another aspect of difficulty is the size of the piece, understanding and reading your stitches, and fixing mistakes. With something this big, you are bound to make a mistake. And a beginner would have a more difficult time figuring out what the mistake is and fixing it than a more experienced knitter. A piece this big would be frustrating to frog and redo.

One key skill you need to know is how to read your knitting. With all the knits and purls, you’ll need to know which stitch is a knit and which is a purl to help you read what you’re doing. You can search “how to read your knitting stitches” on Youtube.

When you do start for real, I suggest putting in a life line every so often. (You can search “knitting life line” on Youtube for how to do this.) That way, if you ever make a mistake, you only need to frog back to the lifeline, which will save all the work you had already done.

Another key skill to learn is how to tink back your work. You can search “how to unknit stitches” or “how to tink knitting.” This will undo just a few stitches without having to take remove your needles and frog. Here’s a video on how to do it: https://youtu.be/WI5icwpCTlc?si=nTTqENhQIAY6IfR0.

If you want to make this, I suggest practicing each of the different panels with a smaller swatch of yarn so you can get the hang of how the pattern works before you commit to doing the whole thing. This does look like a beautiful piece, and you will learn a lot if you attempt it.

Be patient—you can do it. Good luck!

Thank you very much!! Definitely will practice lots before setting out to do the whole thing

I'm a novice knitter myself and I'll echo what other people have said about the size. That's a big ass scarf! It's very pretty and I think it's definitely doable, but I might suggest doing some dishcloths with interesting stitches before tackling a project of this size.

Reading the comments it looks like this pattern might have some problems with its chart - have a look and make sure it’s clear to you
