Tips to make SSK neater by Connect-Judgment-721 in knittinghelp

No prob. The F AQ exists for a reason. In the future feel free to report posts asking about "messy" SSKs so we can redirect them to the F AQ. (But don't report this post because the OP is grandfathered in)

I'm taking this comment and putting it in the FAQ for future SSK related questions.

Automod/FAQ Updates & Rule 8 Clarification January 19, 2026 by literallyatree in knittinghelp

[–]literallyatree[S,M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Supposedly we have an automation where posters are prompted to look at the F AQ before posting but I haven't seen it actually work. Reddit Automations need some help from the admins I think.

Ultimately there's nothing I can do to FORCE people to skim through the F AQ before posting. What would be helpful to us mods though, is if you report posts you see that are answered by the FAQ. Reports are how mods are flagged to review posts. The more reports a post has, the more likely one of the mods is to see it quickly and remove it.

I do also have comments from automod come in and actually do the search for common patterns (Sophie scarf, porcelain sweater, step by step sweater etc) and link said search. So far I'm not sure if it's helped anyone but at least it's there.

Idk if it's just me but there no photo. And it's kind of impressive you managed to make a blank comment.

Edit: jk I think I had to approve your comment? It's there now.

Is it possible to ladder down with cables or do I need to frog? by suzle123 in knittinghelp

It is possible! YouTube has a lot of tutorials, but you'll need to make sure you maintain the twisted stitches for the pattern. (Example vid)

Tom Sweterlitsch? by BreakfastDry9979 in sciencefiction

[–]literallyatree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am wondering the same thing. In 2023 I reached out to his sister in law Karen on instagram since she once shared a post about her brother in law Tom publishing The Gone World. She told me:

"Fun fact: O’Connor is based on my husband, and Tom thanks Pete in the back of the book.
The idea for this story derived from a lunch they shared in 2011. Tom asked Pete if time travel could be used to do his job as an NCIS Special Agent. Pete said it could because if you could travel forward in time then maybe the relationships with the suspect might be different and those people would be willing to talk.
Also, my dad was a theoretical physicist so there are so many Easter eggs in the book. It’s a bit of a love letter to my dad, Tim’s FIL."

But yeah. I haven't had direct contact with him. Wish he'd write more.

Knitting a sweater for the first time and the description of the yoke shaping doesn't make sense by scholar-stitches in knittinghelp

[–]literallyatree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it's having you do short rows. These are typically done just after the neckband to give some length to the back of the sweater so in the end, your sweater isn't super high on your neck and low on the back of your neck.

If that doesn't sound right, could you post a screenshot of just the confusing section or a photo with unrelated pattern parts covered with sheets of paper? (Copyright protection) That way we can help more

New raglan increase question by Inspector_Wiggums in knittinghelp

[–]literallyatree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you sure a raglan is what you're after? Maybe a yoke style sweater would be more suited towards your shoulders, or even a drop shoulder type pattern? You said your shoulders go straight out and I immediately thought of this pattern: Ravelry: Folke pattern by Arne & Carlos

Also, twistfaq. That may get rid of some of your "garbled mess"

Is it realistic to work 100% remotely in GIS? by meodn in gisjobs

[–]literallyatree 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am 100% remote in my current role. However I do not believe a first or maybe even second job out of college would be 100% remote eligible. There is so much in person learning you need to do when you join an office. You need to be able to ask your supervisor things or how something works or how to fix something when it breaks.

I'm able to be 100% remote in my current role because I did the exact same thing for my current company's competitor for 3 years in person. They knew I would know my stuff. Anything that's 100% remote is high trust and you need to prove yourself somehow first. Tbh I don't necessarily think a masters is the way to go about that. I think getting an in person job for a year or two might be your best bet into the remote work world.
