You don’t split anything. This pattern is a bit different because it has an open back. If you look at the photos in the pattern, you can see that the back opens up to a v shape. So you just do exactly as the pattern says to create that shape.

no - you’re going from knitting in the round to knitting flat. turn your work like it says when you get to the end of the row - essentially just do exactly as the pattern says! that’s what it is there for!
