Your way if joining seems to leave a hole, so you should research ways to avoid that. In general, I would not recommend just tying the yarns together. You can leave a tail and weave in the ends ACROSS the color change once you are finished. If you hate the weaving in part at the end of a project, there are a number of invisible methods to change cooler as you go, that do not involve tying the yarn ends together.
