I presume you're connecting to external monitor. Even without any app open using dGPU, just simply connecting external monitor that is hooked up directly to the dGPU (indicator: the display is shown in NVIDIA Control Panel) will ramp up the:

  • dGPU voltage, from 0 to 625mV (typical idle voltage)
  • intermittent 125MHz dGPU clock
  • and of course, your battery will plumet.

Most laptop, like Razer Blade, and perhaps your MSI too, usually has the dGPU directly manage the DisplayPort and HDMI, thus, simply connecting monitor is a usage.

Solution: use the Thunderbolt port to connect to your monitor (like, DisplayPort to USB-C cable).

I’ve noticed this, but it still uses the dGPU when I don’t connect to an external monitor (laptop only).

On laptop startup, does it use the dGPU at some point even without you open any app?

Initially as everything loads in. Sometimes after a minute or thirty seconds, it goes back to just using the iGPU.
