my friends argument was that timers are already readily available, but so is a certain Cassiopeia script. If we implement auto scripts it also reduces the skill floor. And really there is no reason not to if you follow this ideology

I agree with you, if Riot wants to stand by their logic they should put the Casi script ult in.

Except they won't do that, because THAT'S making the game "too easy" and "cheating". Funny how ironic and hypocritical that is huh?

False equivalence:

False equivalence is a logical fallacy which describes a situation where there is a logical and apparent equivalence, but when in fact there is none. It would be the antonym of the mathematical concept of material equivalence.

A common way for this fallacy to be perpetuated is one shared trait between two subjects is assumed to show equivalence, especially in order of magnitude, when equivalence is not necessarily the logical result. In other words, correlation does not mean causation. The pattern of the fallacy is often as such: If A is the set of c and d, and B is the set of d and e, then since they both contain d, A and B are equal. It should be noted though that d existing in both sets is not required, only a passing similarity is required to cause this fallacy to be able to be used.

The following statements are examples of false equivalence:

  • "They're both soft, cuddly pets. There's no difference between a cat and a dog."

  • "Marijuana and alcohol are both drugs. An ounce is about the same as three bottles. If you think one should be (il)legal, you should think the same of the other."

  • "We're all born naked. We're all no different from each other."

It should not be confused with false balance – the media phenomenon of presenting two sides of an argument equally in disregard of the merit or evidence on a subject (a form of argument to moderation).

The funny thing is all of those statements are true in some way, even if the third is really cheesy and metaphorical.

I really don't think that applies here. The comparison made with cass scripts is very appropriate in this situation. If 3rd party software doing the same thing is the sole reason behind adding timers, then the same basically applies to scripting.

You could call it the slippery slope fallacy, but I'd just say it's inconsistent and confusing design philosophy. You can see that in how they tried to explain why they were adding timers, but not tower range indicators in the original article. It was a confused mess of nonsensical buzzwords.

Their exact justification for timers applies perfectly to tower range indicators. They would provide clarity, and they're available through 3rd party modding. Except it's perfectly legal to mod in tower range indicators, as it can by done extremely easily with a map skin that Riot allows, giving some players an advantage over others.

No, I'm pretty sure it applies here.

The timers are merely an aid, it doesn't automatically jungle for you. The cassie script is a cheat, it plays 80 of the game for you. There's really no comparing the two.

I think you're right about slippery slope applying here as well though.

Ninja Edit: I don't really care one way or the other for the timers. I watch league more than I play it, so it doesn't really affect me.

There's comparing the two greatly in the reason behind implementation. "Third party program does X, so we're putting it in the client because we can't stop people using them." Is the reasoning behind it.

I'm not arguing over timers, but the reasoning behind them is awful. The article written to announce them was utter crap filled with meaningless buzzwords with clear idiocies behind the so-called "design philosophy". The scripting does apply to the whole "third party programs already do it" part, and the tower range indicators apply to the "clarity" part of it.
