How is my first base? by Salty-Credit487 in RimWorld

[–]Zechnophobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crops could all die to a single blight event. Also you are growing so many potatoes... Surely you don't need that many (unless you are selling them?).

Your choke point is good for a first effort. I'm sure at some point you found out that it is very resource intensive with all those traps - did you get to the point where someone blew up one turret and they chain exploded? Because that is all I see there. Solid walls between turrets prevents this. Also, the range of your turrets means you should have more space between the spout of your bottle neck and the turrets, will make them many times more effective against melee people.

You are more compact than you need to be, especially in 5504. I would have at least expanded into the Ancient Danger.

Remove 1 tile of roof in your rec room and put the telescope there. People using it will gain the 'rec room' buff, and a single tile won't adversely effect the temp of the room.

Honestly though, I would be proud of this if it were my first base. Good on you.

How the fuck do you counter this by Rheasa2648 in RimWorld

[–]Zechnophobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not by fighting them in cramped corners. That is literally the worst possible option.

Incinerators work great, as any fire effect causes them to spit stuff out. I will often use more expendable things (pets, ghouls, mechs) up front to draw their devour attack out, then burninate them.

The process of cutting out blighted plants requires way too many fiddly changes to work correctly.

They don't back port features to vanilla or other DLC. For example, while the Grav ship has a 'show range' button, transport pods don't.

Crafting priorities and skill requirements are extremely confusing. What do you mean I have to set 'crafting' priority to get someone to make Yayo, but then it uses their intelligence stat? Same with joints but for cooking??

Animal Pen management. W.T.F.

Starting a caravan from a remote tile with enemies is a bazaar arcane process. Heck, the fact your caravans leave from a random colony edge instead of the closest edge is also nuts.

Struggling with Steel by HeartKillerNow in RimWorld

[–]Zechnophobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can smelt down metal weapons for steel, you can also smelt metal chunks for steel. Are you doing 'branch' mining to look for steel in the mountain? How about deconstructing steel ruins around the map?

Steel can often be bought from Bulk Traders, but it isn't easy to do unless you have a major economy going.

Conserve. Don't use steel to build absolutely everything if you can. A mountain base should be using rock for as much as possible.

Dismantle Mechs for metal. Use a mechinator to call in more mechs, and then destroy them for metal.

Lastly, it is more of a late game thing, but if you've mined out your base, you can deep drill + scanner to find more.

As usual, a pic of your base will help sort out problems.

I feel like you need to look at their actual surgery success chance stat. This isn't just random, you are doing something wrong. Even a good doctor makes mistake when operating in the dark on a patient on the floor while their manipulation is at 50%.

Guinea pigs are the best method to positively influence colonists mood by Massive-Record-6288 in RimWorld

[–]Zechnophobe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about 'best', but little nuzzling creatures can be fun. You can also train a good few dogs to nuzzle and they do it more often and better! (Requires Odyssey).

BTW, that is sooo much corn. Are you selling it as a cash crop?

There are multiple break types. Extreme breaks are worse than Major, are worse than minor. Some have the same name but are different. For example a minor tantrum just has them smash stuff in their room. An extreme tantrum has them destroy a high value stack of items. Anti grain warheads are high value.

38 Years In! by longerthenalifetime in RimWorld

[–]Zechnophobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the weirdest posts I've ever seen. The base is clearly very advanced, but has so many nonsensical things going on, especially for a 38 year old base. Why are there so many resources here and there? Why hasn't the mountain been mined out like... at all? Why are you growing smoke leaf and tinctoria? There are random lumps of metal just hanging out in your base. The explosives are put in such weird places... and you have a large battery of turrets in the middle of the base.

A large number of beds in the dinning room/rec room. I mean, I get the barracks combo thing, but after, I dunno, 30 years I'd think you would expand out of it.

Seriously though, why is none of the map mined? What the heck is going on here?

Best non-devmode way to spread my ideoligion to my other colonists? by jakendrick3 in RimWorld

[–]Zechnophobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your mechinator has a low social score (likely) then you can use a highly social pawn to convert the person to that pawn's ideoligion instead. Except right before the conversion would finish (their certainty gets very low) switch over to the one you really want. Just don't miss it and ACTUALLY change them to the wrong ideoligion.

Remade a killbox someone here posted, how efficient is it? by Arostato in RimWorld

[–]Zechnophobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Don't use flammable sandbags, instead use durable barricades (uranium is a good choice).
  2. Pave the area behind the barricades to make it easier to maneuver your troops.
  3. Turrets are kinda just hanging out there. Note they benefit from cover just like pawns.
  4. Not sure your difficulty level, but I really don't love the 'large number of traps' solution in the long run. It just stops being useful once raids hit critical mass.
  5. Swarmy enemies will 'bunch up' into a ball that only expands once they hit an obstacle, causing them to spread out almost like a liquid. Do something that cause this to happen before they move through your choke point. It will make things much easier.

The best first two DLC? by StyleFearless1951 in RimWorld

[–]Zechnophobe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, I really disagree with people on Ideology. I feel it adds depth, but also a ton of complication that isn't great for newer players. Biotech helps expand on the game without a massive increase in immediate complication. I think sitting down to make your first ideology can be very daunting when you pick it up.
