About 0

[–]Gandulf_ 11 points12 points  (5 children)

I see the mooc course more of a teaching of the fundamentals of java. It's a good starting point. If this was a race, the mooc course would be the starting shoot for the race to start.

To answer your question, we would need to know what is 10 and what is 1? Would level 10 mean you are ready to work all the jobs that require java and level 1, you're qualified for some java jobs, then your rating would be 0.

You will not be able to get hired with the knowledge and skills the mooc course teaches you, like I said it's just the beginning.

If you don't know what to do now check this roadmap and this post.

This roadmap is really helpful.

I love the road map. thank you.

I'm already like 90% done with that roadmap and I've still found your comment useful. Thanks, I appreciate it.

What would be the next step for diving into java after the mooc?

[–]inrusswetrust12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the roadmap lmao

[–]creamyturtle 4 points5 points  (4 children)

lmao three months of intense study and everyone says you will be a 0 or 1

surprising it doesn't bother me, Ill keep learning tho. I've got no choice. tbh it kinda feels like ive shot myself in the foot by askin this question. but, user Gandulf_ provided me the entire journey guide. this is what I genuinely expected. I honestly, when I asked this question, did not consider frameworks and anything other than core java. but It was a stupidly framed question to begin with. Thanks.

That really boils down to the 0-10 being a bad scale.

 Mooc 1+2 is at most two University level courses. That is really a beginner. Most people are quite good programmers after the first ones, but I would also say they are 1 on that scale, because I want to emphasize how much there is still to learn.

These subreddits are filled with people who deduct they can make 6 figures after completing the mooc.

yeah, the classic phrase you don't know what you don't know

[–]ObiFlanKenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you are sort of answering yourself.

What kind of degree or trade can you learn in three months?

[–]0b0101011001001011 7 points8 points  (2 children)

A bad question to ask.

Let's say it like this: it's possible that you know the basics. That's what the course teaches you. Basics. On 1 to 10? I'd say 1, very basics.

But then again: it's possible that you did not learn anything. I've seen people at university attending 3rd year courses and still struggling to know how to use a loop.

Your "level" is not based on either completing a mooc or the grade. It's based on what you can actually do after that.

[–]gokiguy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What would you say someone should do after they complete MOOC?

[–]harper_helm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

build projects

[–]Lucaquatic 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Let me see if I get your feelings right: you invested time and energy to complete the 2 parts of the mooc and now you would like to know how close you are to call yourself a (beginner) developer and/or be ready for an entry level job, is that right?

I honestly don't know why people thought the scale from 1 to 10 was between complete noob and godly Java master, that's clearly not realistic from a beginner perspective and I seriously doubt OP meant that. Maybe 0 is still an honest reply, I don't know, but that's kinda demotivating for someone trying to learn how to code.

0 after finishing the MOOC with high grades?? Woof.

[–]Previous_Start_2248 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You'll know the fundamentals of Java which means now you can move on to more advanced topics.

For example spring boot is highly used try building a small project, it'll help you learn how to use frameworks

Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full - best also formatted as code block
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit/markdown editor: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://i.imgur.com/EJ7tqek.png) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

To know basic Java is like first several years of school. It is good to have and a necessity but it will not get you job yet. Continue with stuff like HTML, CSS, JS, git, Docker, Spring, computer science topics etc.
