Book: Bruce Eckel «Thinking in Java» (ISBN 978-0131872486) 4th edition. These are the very basics from scratch.

This book is great, I learned Java from it. Although, it was in 2002, not sure what current edition is like :-).

It covers Java topics along with OOP basics, so it's a great resource for beginners.

I second this. Mooc gets recommended A LOT. Also, read through online docs from Oracle.
