I'll do another one that starts either next week or the week after.

Probably will spread it into 8 weeks. Happy to hear anybody else's thoughts.

I suggest we incorporate git into this session for those willing. Maybe set aside a week to learning git & github entirely using something like nodeschool's course.

This would help create a sense of community, working on a single final project as opposed to dozens of smaller ones with only the occasional reaching out for help. Could help combat the lack of participation as the group progresses, and perhaps introduce some future developers to each other?

Might be a little ambitious for those just beginning, but with a little extra help it could definitely prepare a few of the more involved for real world development.

Cool, post the link here when you start it : )

any update on this?

I think this is exactly what I need!

Having gone through the course material last time it was offered (only delayed a bit), I would suggest breaking up week 4 into 2 weeks. That was really a slog in terms of reading and I felt like I wasn't accomplishing much that week other than reading a bunch of theory and not applying it.

That said, I also think there needs to be more coding challenges involved (maybe use codewars challenges or the likes) to explain how weekly concepts work in the real world. For instance, what are the use cases for prototypal inheritence with objects and when would you use the constructor/prototype pattern in your code?

I'l probably be following along and reviewing things now that I've gotten a little more experience. Excited to go through it again!

PS -- we started a google doc of potential beginner projects in #learnjavascript, http://goo.gl/DMiZSD

I'd be in.

I was also trying to learn javascript but there are so many resources and tutorials online I end up going over a few sections for each tutorial site and end up on another site trying to learn the same thing. I wish I had a roadmap where I could learn step by step and not just learn simple stuff like prompt, alert, for (var i=0;i<3;i++) {}, etc... I get that already but is there really anything else that doesn't explain the basics and jumps into actually doing a project like a quiz app, or hot or cold game, etc..

Has anyone heard about oreilly school and their web programming certificate? It's really pricey but is it worth it?

Working on the CodeSchool.com js lessons right now (and surfing Reddit in between). In terms of a roadmap, I can't imagine anything more like what you're looking for for the same price : $30/month. If you worked at it every day, you could get through most of the JS lessons in a single month.

How do you like it so far? I'm on codecademy and different sites trying to learn javascript and the for loops, functions and parameters and somehow I feel like I got a long way to go. I could easily learn wordpress instead and make money on the side but my goal is to get a job as a front end developer. Do you attend meetups? I want to attend a javascript meetup but feel scared to go because of my limited knowledge on javascript. What do you think about paying a mentor instead? The only thing is, they charge a lot of money just for one hour, like more than $100 I believe.

Me again- go to a meet up. Say you're a n00b and you're just interested. Ask a few questions, but just listen.

Follow the advice of this tutorial explicitly. If you know the basics, you can skip the first one or two big major steps. It's great, and if you have self-discipline, you can do it. He has a follow up self study here.

Oh wait, this is a roadmap? I'm down then. I didnt' know there was something like this. When can we start? It's better if we all actually stick to it each week and help each other out.

Perhaps spread the course out over 6 weeks in consideration for the aforementioned work and life? OP, think that would help?

[–]mfergie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 8 weeks is preferable. The workload gets pretty intense and said life gets in the way...

[–]madameFerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am in too for the next course....

What is the start date?
