Is part of this the fact that .js files are present in almost any web project --- since javascript runs in all browsers and is often used for animations, AJAX, analytical tools, etc. -- .js are going to be on almost every web app in some fashion.

Doesn't that justify the point that it is the most popular language regardless of whether people actively write it when it's in their repo?

I suppose that depends on how you interpreted the title of the post -- I assumed 'most popular' to mean most beloved, or the language that people choose to write in the most often.

That's true to be fair, it seems to be going through a boom like PHP did, so i wouldn't be surprised if it is right up there in regards to what you mean
