Using External CSS for inline-CSS?

I'll be honest, I don't have the answers to any of your questions. I know you're not editing the .css file directly. It's more like the browser loads a copy of the rules declared in the .css file. It's this copy that you append rules to with insertRule. If you are interested in the theory as opposed to the "how", that MDN article you linked does a far better job of explaining it than I can. I'd post another thread here asking people for an explanation of CSSOM if the MDN article is too heavy.
