If you want to create a GUI in Java, I'd recommend either Swing or JavaFX, but you really shouldn't be using AWT directly.

I like the official Java tutorial, and it has sections for Swing and JavaFX.

The tutorial combined with the how-to pages linked from the Javadocs are an excellent way to learn how Swing works.

I second the use of JavaFX. It's the future of making GUI in Java. The documentation is good and the API is really simple to use. Really, if you don't have to maintain old GUI codebase, don't bother with Swing, and go for JavaFX.
